Agree it gets annoying hearing about Virginia colleges constantly. No interest here. |
Talk about obnoxious…. |
The reason is that all state flagships want OOS students who pay more. So our in state cannot get into our instate and vice versa. So clever of all these states to swap students right!?
Some students also complain in state is high school 2.0. I sort of doubt it at a 40K student pop school but I hear it a lot from girl parents. |
The kids I know got into VT but went to Michigan State, Ohio, UConn, Delaware, lots of places. |
As mentioned upthread, a lot of kids are looking to avoid high school 2.0
And as others have also said, fit is important. If you have the money, why not send kids to the place they feel most comfortable. |
+1 This sums up our DC's decision to a tee. |
With graduating HS classes of 600 or less and VA College Freshmen entrances of 5,000 plus. I really doubt VA is high school 2.0. Parents, don't let your kid fool you! |
![]() People like the PP are so transparent. No doubt a UVA booster! |
Aww. Sounds like maybe you should move to another state and then you'll get to hear all about how great *their* colleges are. There are a few states with great public universities. VA is one of them. Sorry that triggers you! (and btw - I've lived all over the US and the world, so I've had more than my share of "life experience and independent thoughts." ![]() |
NP: VT is great for a few majors, not so great for many others. I'm not a UVA booster (didn't go there, don't have a kid there), but the primary reason I know people from NoVA go to an OOS flagship is they didn't get into UVA and they aren't CS/engineering majors so VT isn't that compelling and they want the big school/big sports vibe so W&M isn't that compelling. It's not being a UVA booster, it just seems to be a common story. |
DP. You realize this is a DC-area site, right? If you were on a CA parenting site, you'd be hearing all about the UCs. |
![]() Riiiight... |
It's not. That's something people say when they actually have no clue. |
+1 I think it's also something parents say when their kids (hushed voice) don't get into their preferred state schools. |
Often it's sour grapes/face-saving for people who don't get into their flagship. |
