You think Nottingham parents are snobby? You haven't met the Discovery parents. They will not support this. A coalition of Nottingham, Discovery, and Jamestown parents are going to come for ATS - a school which really has no business even existing.

I sincerely doubt Discovery and Jamestown parents are going to form this group with you. I would love to watch the clash of the Great White North Supermoms and the Option School Zealots but I just don’t think it’s a realistic possibility.

Do you think Discovery parents want to absorb 200 Nottingham kids? They do not.

Discovery kids came from Nottingham. It’s the same neighborhood.

I believe this is true. The problem is when all the north Arlington pta moms leave and you are stuck in Alexandria public schools. Good luck!

Gee, I never thought of it that way. After all, it's the north Arlington PTA moms that determine the quality of my south arlington schools. If they leave, surely our teachers and involved south Arlington parents will leave, too.

You have to understand that losing a highly motivated, highly involved UMC population from your school system does not bode well for its future, right? Not a threat, just a fact.

We have an example of what that looks like next door and in just about every town in the southern United States.

We all have an interest in rational decision making from APS because we all pay for it and are affected by it.

I commit to be rational and think of the whole, if my neighbors in other schools can commit to not be vindictive based on perceived slights from 10 years ago.

I agree - no one cares. PTA work is invisible, underappreciated, mocked, and judged. But when no one is available to raise money, plan events, attend school board meetings, organize support for the teachers, and build spirit, identity, and community, then you will wonder what happened.

PTAs are important do great work. But the departure of some pta Nottingham moms who won’t run the winter carnival or sponsor the special music lessons won’t be end of APS. I promise. You Nott moms think you are indispensable. You’re not. You can leave. Arlington, APS, and even No Arl will live on without you. Is Nottingham going to try to get Don Beyer involved like they did in 2018? That was a riot.

Hahhhaha. So cute that you think that your south Arlington school is unaffected by the exodus of the privileged kids in north Arlington. I mean, tons of folks are heading to Arlington send their kids to wakefield.

Wasn’t it the Nottingham PTA moms who gave Drew $2000 for a spring fling but only if the Drew moms went to work at Nottingham’s spring fling?

This is just hysteria and get over yourself. 1. All of Nottingham is not going anywhere even if the school closes. Most people don't have that opttion and carry on. 2. You are a sliver of the UMC crowd in Arlington. A sliver. "All the north Arlington PTA moms" are not going anywhere.

So to recap, get over yourself.

DP but if this is the thing that pushes you to private school, so be it. You already had one foot out the door, clearly.

Lots of families left APS after the pandemic and honestly, they’re not coming back. Not because of superior education, but because private schools offer a more controlled environment. If that’s what you want, then it’s where you were always going to end up. I don’t know what to say. Boundaries are going to change, things are going to change. If that’s not okay with you, private school is the only place you’ll be comfortable.

Oh that sounds familiar. They are something else. Love that they seem to think it will be the demise of all of Arlington if their precious offspring have to go to another fabulous school that is only a mile away. Like gorgeous Discovery or Tuckahoe. The horror. The horror. It will be EXACTLY like Alexandria public schools. The metal detectors and the gangs. Just awful. 🙄

+1 everyone seems to forget that discovery wasn’t even in existence 10 years ago. It opened in 2015 with kids from the Nottingham neighborhood- these PTA moms at both schools are friends, WGCC tennis buddies, etc.

I think what would probably happen is other people would step up to fill the void that your obnoxious and non-welcoming selves left. And the things that would carry on would be things people actually care about.

Also I used to live in Alexandria and they have very active PTAs at the elementary level just like Arlington. Alexandria schools are not in the situation they are in due to lack of PTA moms.

Let’s just put it all out there, then. Those things happened because of desegregation. The end. People freaked out and that was the result. But this is not that, and it would be an even more insane overreaction. But you do you I guess.

If they don’t come back, are you not at all concerned that that most privileged areas of the county have private school as the new norm? That terrifies me for our public school system. What set Arlington apart in the past was a community rallying around public schools, together. I am concerned that North Arlington will no longer support our schools in this way. That would seem to be a problem for South Arlington. Over the long haul.

DP and no not really. Private school is not the new norm. It's just more people than it was before and oh well. This particular proposal is really not the make or break thing people are making it out to be. Life will go on.

APS is at capacity! So close down a school? For what what problem are we trying to solve? What renovations are absolutely needed that will take longer than a few months that can't be broken down into summer-long chunks? For how long? No partial school closures while renovating - it's all or nothing? These are BASIC questions that have no answers in the pre-CIP. This level of mismanagement and lack of rigor would get me fired at my job. Who cares about the N vs S nonsense.

Ding ding ding. We have a winner. Ask the real questions. Even abingdon had a full scale rebuild and never closed. What’s the plan APS? Who’s moving here? For how long? What happens to it next?

APS isn’t going to bus kids from Barcroft to Nottingham. That’s ridiculous. Is this about MPSA? because those details were a mere footnote in the career center plans. Arlington residents deserve to know what the longer term plans are and stop being expected to eat bulls*t a spoonful at a time.

No. Not concerned one bit.
