Woodward Boundary Study discussion at next BoE meeting

I think they are going to create some special programs and they are going to shift kids from east to west. Maybe they will have a vocational program at Whitman. That will really stir things up!!

We received a note from the NB PTSA asking us to write to the BOE and ask them not to delay the opening of Woodward. I didn't know delaying the project was discussed at the meeting. Can anyone speak to that issue? Also, since construction is under way already, what sense does it make to delay?

What does delay looks like here?

WJ is ridiculously overcrowded. Delaying Woodward shouldn't be an option.

If it gets delayed it will be because the County Council doesn't fully fund the CIP. FYI, it's already been delayed one year, Woodeard was supposed to have opened for Northwood in 2023 and WJ and the DCC in 2025. It's already been postponed to 2024 for WJ and the DC. And apparently BCC and Whitman too

Yes, Woodward was originally scheduled to open for WJ/DCC in 2025, that is currently delayed to 2026. Is there a proposal on the table to delay to 2027?

Woodward was not on the list of 'non-recommended reductions' discussed at last week's BOE meeting. The only potential delays were to the Highland View and Damascus projects. See page 7:

And on page 21 of the same document it says "Charles W. Woodward High School will reopen in August 2026."

When I read the original plan I took it to mean WJ and the adjacent schools to Woodward. They were only using DCC loosely in the sense that BCC was once part of the DCC before parents fought to get it removed.

BCC was never part of the DCC.

The delay to 2026 has to do with housing Woodward functioning as a holding school for Northwood in 2025.

The only people who pretend the schools are equal are people in lesser schools. The high SES schools know better than anybody the differences. The muddled middle has a lot of parity, save a special program or two most of the DCC are about the same.

Same academic product would not address safety, family focus on education, and Academic peers.

Just yesterday,

An 18-year-old high school student is in custody following the armed robbery of a Montgomery County gas station.
…one suspect pulled a knife from his waistband. The suspect went behind the counter, held the knife to the clerk,

Schools don't have socioeconomic statuses.

No, they are using DCC to mean DCC here. Not every DCC school will end up feeding to Woodward, but most DCC boundaries will shift. It will basically be a domino effect. Yes, it will relieve some of the overcrowding at WJ, but no one should think that they are just going to cut WJ in half and leave both WJ and Woodward underenrolled. They are going to try to make every school a little bit less overcrowded, and use this chance to backfill the handful of MCPS high schools that are underutilized. I don't have any predictions for what that will look like, but I can't imagine MCPS won't use this chance to really try to ease the pain points all over the area.
