I’m probably exaggerating the situation but if I thought of it I’m sure others have as well.

No they won’t. There is no too far left in MOCO these days. Anything goes.

Yep. Jawando and Elrich got rid of SROs in schools. This is the logical next step for them to pursue. As left as we can go is their motto. And people keep voting for the same types of politicians, so it’s what the public wants.

Actually, I hope we move leftward over the next election. First of all it would be nice to not have to fight against a Republican governor. Secondly I hope we can kick the developer-funded councilmembers out. Will be nice to see Riemer and Friedson gone, those two are the worst. The only really good councilmember we have is Jawando.
Elrich 200% must be re-elected. Would be great to elect someone like Brandy Brooks to the Council, and I also like Kristin Mink. There are great candidates for D2 and D4 as well. We need fewer white men on the council.

Montgomery County is changing and that’s a really good thing. It doesn’t have to be all posh and white. I’d gladly kick out some of the multimillionaires if they are the ones trying to block progress for everyone else. Fewer mega rich people is fine if it means less income inequality. I’d like MoCo to be the national leader in reducing income inequality and making more progress in racial justice.

If you don’t like it, you can leave. That means fewer reactionaries in the way of the rest of us in creating the kind of society we want to live in. Get the knuckledraggers out of the way and we can build a Scandinavian type system right here in America.

Lol, racist demands white people move so that they can setup a society modeled after gigantically majority white countries.

Oh the hypocrisy.

Goddamn you looney bins in Takoma Park and Silver Spring are truly, mind warpingly stupid.

+1 million

And, unfortunately, they are in charge, have the loudest voices and run the county. They are running this county into the dumpster.

exactly.

You are free to leave. There is no iron curtain along the Potomac.

And why the hell would I pay more taxes to give UBI to citizens from other countries that are here illegally? MoCo rolls out the red carpet for illegal immigrants.

While I'm not a huge fan of UBI, MoCo bond rating is a AAA. I assume you know what that means, right?

I work for the county, in the finance/budget area. The government is rotting from within. The average resident can't see it yet, but it's happening. We are in the black for the first time in years, and instead of using the additional funds to identify and correct structural deficits in service delivery, it will likely all go to fairly large raises for employees -- because it's an election year.

Everything now is for show. It's never about substance.

The government is rotting because of 30 years of fiscal hamstringing because of the property tax law written in 1990 that tied total revenue to inflation rather than property tax RATE. Thankfully the ballot question last year fixed that. No thanks to idiots like Robin Ficker.

No one takes Robin seriously. Why do you pay that loon any mind?

Don’t worry, we plan to leave at some point. My neighbors already left for Fredrick.

But, once you lose your middle class and UMC tax base, don’t pretend that it won’t have a negative impact on the County. Public schools need a strong taxpayer base, plus buy-in from families in order to be successful.

Riiiiight, because $800/month is enough to live the good life in MoCo. $800 would get you a shared room in a basement. Ten years ago.

However, it COULD make the difference for someone who needs to fix their car to get to a job interview, to not have to choose between utilities and groceries, or not have to ration insulin and die.

It is enough to lure all homeless bums from DC and VA and I am good with that.

Why would you continue to work there if you know the finances are in deep trouble? I have only ever worked for the private sector, and when one of the companies I was working for got into some financial issues, I immediately left. If you see the writing on the wall, why would you stay? I hear there are lots of job openings, and employers can't find good workers.

DC and parts of NoVa are looking UBI, too, so I don't think the homeless will be making that treck. It's easier for them to stay there and get UBI.

Actually they would get a foundation to fund about 90% of it

Why only 90%? Should some rich folks in MC found 100%?

Rich folks in MoCo will simply leave MoCo if UBI continues.

I’m in public service to help people. And local government can be a great way to help people.

It is toxic here. But I have too much time in and a good pension. Another job elsewhere would have to adequately compensate for the loss of pension contributions and ultimately, a full retirement benefit.

County services suffer first anyway. They continue to give us raises and cut or water down your services.

It sounds like the entire DMV is toast. UBI for tons of illegal immigrants and a whole bunch of other free money to low skilled, low education labor. Fantastic way to kill a society and economy. I hope all productive people flee this slowly unfolding train wreck en masse.

Three households in my family are all planning to leave within the next five years. But it's not just this.

Good thing is, we all now have the ability to work remotely permanently. It won't happen overnight, but it will happen.

The biggest problem is the decline of the public schools.

the pilot hand picks people, so there is no "UBI for tons of illegal immigrants". What do you have against "low skilled, low education" people? Didn't Trump say he loves the poorly educated? How does a city expect to have people work in the service industry if all the poors are pushed out? Do you never eat out? Why do I have a feeling that if you got really slow service, you would get really mad? Should we raise the minimum wage to $20/hour so that people can live where they work? Or do you think poor people should live in the ghettos and only be allowed in the rich areas only to work?

Seems like people like you are contributing to the county bloat. Also, if the county finances go down the tubes, your pension may take a hit.

^^^A lot of insanity above

1. People don’t understand that bond ratings are not an endorsement of good governance

2. Riemer is not some political centrists. He’s a careerist out only for himself and will do whatever he thinks is in his personal interests at any moment to further his career. He’s a nihilist. Believes in nothing.

3. The way these things work is that the county’s politics, finance and trajectory will means that affluent people currently here won’t leave but new affluent people won’t come, which creates all sorts of terrible political dynamics that we see playing out with policies favoring separately political ideologues and also a large affluent retiree community. Basically say goodbye to quality schools which will eventually undermine the core economic driver of this county.

All data clearly indicates that this county peaked in 1990 and it’s been rotting slowly and steadily ever since.

You clearly missed this thread. The UBI being proposed in MoCo is open to illegal immigrants. It is just a pilot run. We all know they'll want to expand it permanently 'regardless of immigration status'. It will be UBI for illegal immigrants, mark my worlds. This area done for.

I remember when I started school in Baltimore in the mid 1990s. Montgomery County was recognized as this successful, leading, high achievement place. It's amazing how consistently the place has declined since then, and I've been watching it happen the whole time.
