But it's _all_ boys who are falling behind, just not white boys.

Take the same article but change "men" to "people of color" and schools would be lamenting the trend and looking for ways to encourage that group to apply in larger numbers, set up special programs, etc. But because it's men.. crickets.

Yes, and the lack of attention to unique issues facing males, as a group, in education manifests itself further disadvantaged boy of color. From a young age, boys who are active and don't exhibit what is viewed as ideal behavior are continuously viewed as bad and not smart. They are told that their perspectives don't matter. This is a real thing, but no one cares because they think some past advantage is being corrected. You can't correct historical injustices by teaching any children, regardless of race or gender, that they aren't capable and don't matter.

What role do video games play? Why study hard when games are much more fun?

Yep. That's the standard BS line, along with Asian boys have no trouble with school. The truth is that many boys turn to video games to escape educational settings where they feel like failures. It's a catch-22.

I do think this is part of it. I think there’s also a degree of parental coddling or sons—some segment of these guys are living at their parents house while the parents are rationalizing that they need some time to find their path. I would like to see a comprehensive study of what 19-22 year old men are doing, if not college. I’d guess some trades, some military, and some underemployed and living with their parents.

That’s total BS. Boys turn to video games because they are fun, and are particularly designed to be addictive especially to young male brains. All my nephews and my son and his friends are all hard core gamers, and they have no academic problems. Even the ones with PhDs love video games! But if you want to give up and not try very hard, the sweet siren song of gaming (and porn) is there just waiting for you.

Statistically, incarceration also probably makes a difference. There’s a lot more males aged 18-22 in prison than females.

People who want to blame young people for their own problems without even considering whether the system is setting them up to fail.

From the article:

S
ocial science researchers cite distractions and obstacles to education that weigh more on boys and young men, including videogames, pornography, increased fatherlessness and cases of overdiagnosis of boyhood restlessness and related medications.

Comparing male to female living at home rates is not a great way to assess things as it is a lot easier for women to move out and live with a partner.

I would like to see statistics of women and men living alone age 18-34.

Women moving out of the house ASAP with that being the main goal and bouncing from shitty co-habitation situations every few years in their twenties isn’t ideal either.
