DP...lake effect in OH is brutal. For me personally, I would rather have cold and sunny than grey all of the time. |
+1. Also on the west coast Whitman or maybe Puget Sound. |
This, look for something affordable. And it doesn’t have to be perfect, it’s for a year. |
it’s gave “dire” financial problems. Quote is from the current President. |
Of MN is too far, Op’s kid really doesn’t want West Coast. |
| Look at CTCL schools. Lol |
For a safety, look at St. Joseph’s University in Philly. Undergrad classes are mostly under 20 students and classes are taught by professors not T.A.s (though many are professors of practice). It’s Jesuit, and has a lovely community. He’ll probably be accepted to the Honors College and get merit. |
Huh? St Joe’s is a fine school but fits none of OP’s criteria. This is a totally out of left field suggestion. |

I'm originally from Minnesota. Agree with PP that St. Olaf is easy to get to from Minneapolis/St. Paul (about 45 minute drive). The town of Northfield is very small but has some cute restaurants, coffee shops, etc.
Minnesota winters are brutal - there's no way around it. Lawrence University would be farther/harder to get to. |
What about UMBC? |
Why just a year? |
| I grew up in Lancaster PA and went to Case Western and really didn't mind the Lake effect weather. If it was going to be cold (Similar temp to where I grew up), I liked that there was frequent, pretty snow and life didn't stop for snow like it did where I grew up or does here in DC. |
+2 I went to law school in Minneapolis. I'll take a Minnesota winter any day over Chicago or Cleveland winter. It's the difference between wet, icy, windy, WET temps below 35 degrees (lake effect) and freezing air with actual snowflakes and some sun. The latter (MN) you can block out with down coats and go about your day. It's almost impossible to get warm in the windy icy wet snow you see coming off the Great Lakes. Yikes. |
| Sounds like this kid needs to toughen up. Maybe the Marines? |
I assume PP meant because you'd transfer out, which is terrible advice. |
