It's obvious this was going to happen.
Public schools cannot require proof of vaccination, so they can't trust that adults or kids will be vaccinated and therefore all they can do is require masks.

Private schools CAN require proof of vaccination, and have the luxury of not starting out with masks in their upper schools, although, they'll be forced to when cases surge in our area in the fall. They'll be able to buy a few months, that's all.

What? Why do you think they can't?

Require proof of vax? I wish they could, but they're not even trying because apparently there's strong legal arguments that publicly-funded institutions should not mandate "experimental" vaccines that are still under Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). Once they are fully approved, I really hope some school districts will require them, but they will still face strong oppositions from the "equity" crowd and "individual liberties" crowd...

That was a legal theory, but it's probably wrong, after that federal court case indicating that publicly-funded universities could in fact require covid vaccination for faculty, staff, and students.

Great. Let's push for public schools to require vaccinations for all adults and kids who are old enough!

What are the vaccination figures for DC teenagers again? Do you think there is a single 9th grade classroom that will be more than 50% vaccinated?

Probably in W3. Maybe in W2 and W6.

Wards 7 and 8 are in the single digits.

Start the petition. I’ll sign it.

I bet Wilson has more than 50% vaccination among all individuals who will be in the building. I’m super annoyed that there is no nuance in the instructions for vaccination rate in the building. They need to be gathering this information and making appropriate allowances.

9th grade at Wilson, say. Aren't students there from all over town?

Across the city I thought it was 30% - skewed significantly to higher income communities.

Yes, 25-27% city-wide.

How will this be handled in an overcrowded middle school situation when at least most 6th graders will not be vax eligible, and we know that none of these "recommended" mitigation measures are feasible? Will there be testing? Will there be opportunities for kids who test positive for covid or who are living with people positive with covid to learn from home (if not, this is a strong disincentive to testing or reporting)? Or are we all just rolling the dice?

They will just shut down the schools again.

Of course they can require proof of vaccination. We fill out vaccination forms every year.

+1
Seriously, schools have been requiring vaccinations since I was a child. Not a new concept.

Dice.
The last response to the 'last resort' thread is something about 'not indulging the parents' anxiety about covid'. That's where we are.
Last year, families were already not reporting and were opting out of testing.
It's going to spread like the West Coast fires, with rocket fuel.

(1) They will be at substantially less risk of getting or spreading COVID.
(2) When enough people are vaccinated, case rates will go down and stay down, so the pandemic will actually be over.

Kids have a right to a public education through high school. They do not have such a right with respect to college. I expect the vaccine to be required once it receives regular approval, just like the MMR and DTaP.
