Rehoboth got expensive

Same. I wouldn't pay to rent a house there but I'd stay for free with a friend. Too many downsides: the surf is rough, the water is cold, beach is crowded. I'd rather fly to Caribbean or Florida for blue water than look at the dreary brown water in DE and OBX.

Ocean City too. My parents have a place there so we stay for free and I was shocked at how much menu prices have gone up in the past year or two. We tend to eat in a lot. I agree with others--I would have a hard time paying the prices they charge when I could fly to FL or the Caribbean in 2-3 hours.

Or maybe they're just posting pictures because they're enjoying their time at the beach?

Yeah, sure, whatever. I just meant that these are the type of people who post conspicuously from “it” places and they would never in a million years hang out with people like my cousins. Just an indicator of how Rehoboth got expensive, which is what this thread is about.

Op here. We’ve been coming every year for 8 years because we had small kids and we come because it is close, convenient, with good restaurants for not very much $$. I am now spending $35-50 for breakfast, $75-85 for lunch and $125-200 for dinner per day. We stay in a hotel for the pool. Games are now $2 each and skeeball is $.50.

the DE/MD/VA beaches are cold, with brown water, and dirty boardwalks. I have never understood it. I don't even consider the drive from DC to be close or that convenient. The saving grace was affordability.

Oh man, we haven’t been in two years but went every year before then, so not looking forward to finding changes. If Sammy’s‘s got expensive I don’t think I could handle it!

I just played skeeball yesterday AM in Rehoboth with the kids and it was 20 cents per game! I think they now have dynamic pricing where games are more expensive in the evenings. Every machine now requires you to use the digital credits/points swipe card.

Well, even McDonald's breakfast can easily be $25 for family of four. We buy breakfast or lunch items some of the days when we are on vacation! Just healthy not to eat out every meal.

I agree that's it's been expensive for awhile. But, I think the beaches are pretty great. I particularly love the drive on beaches south of Rehoboth where you can set up for the whole day and fish. I love the bay where you can lay in a raft and watch the sunset. The bay has some pretty fun boating and jet skiing if you like that sort of thing.

Where do you go exactly to raft in the bay?

We did take-out crabs this last weekend and it was $350 plus I added $30 as a tip.

-Two dozen large crabs
-Two pounds of old bay shrimp
-A bunch of side items
-One crab cake platter (two cakes + sides)

This was at the Surfing Crab outside of Rehoboth along the Ocean Highway.

Interesting article on the crazy market pricing right now:

Our solution was shorter vacation. We're going for 3 days/2 nights, and mid-week. Even then, it was hard to find a available decent hotel on the boardwalk. Ended up paying $550/night. I guess it helps the local economy there, right?

The Post ran a story over the weekend - beach businesses are short staffed so they’ve had to raise their wages to entice applicants and have passed on the expense to customers. A burger that was $14 is now $16, etc.

Fixed that for you. If you are willing to stay in Milton or Georgetown, it's A LOT cheaper.

Anything within a four hour drive of DC is priced too damn high. We just gave up this year, and won't be taking a vacation away..
