Why is it part of the default lineup? In this day and age people should be able to select the channels they want a la carte. This is why I no longer watch cable TV. I have zero interest in 90% of the programming on it and can get the stuff I want online elsewhere.

I’m not joking when I say that I think some of that reflects the dogged determination of some of its viewer to watch it, but also the fact that it’s like the default channel at nursing homes, auto shops, waiting rooms, etc.

The only thing that is consistently blaring in nursing homes, auto shops, waiting rooms, and airports (which you left out) is CNN. And everyone ignores it while looking at their phones instead. CNN is a joke and Americans are well aware.

I would really really like to give up cable altogether, but we live in a lower area that gets bad reception. I'm even more pissed about the sports fees for the sports we don't watch. As well as the FOX we don't watch, and the CNN we don't watch either.

Eventually I may just go with a streaming service if they get better at offering local channels.

No, I see you still don't understand the explanation. It's that rather than watching FOX News and only FOX News, liberals get their news from a wide variety of sources.

Take 20 conservatives, 17 of them will almost exclusively get their news from FOX, because they've been taught that everything else is "fake news"
Take 20 liberals, and 20 of them will get some of their news from CNN, some of their news from ABC, some of their news from NBC, or CBS, Bloomberg, or PBS, or any number of news sources. There are also some liberals who watch FOX News for balance and to understand what the other side is saying - though that is NOT the case for conservatives as I constantly see "you won't see this on MSM" when in fact it is being talked about on MSM too - most conservatives at this point have absolutely no clue what's ACTUALLY on non-conservative news because they've been indoctrinated in a belief that it's all "fake news"

Bottom line is that the news market for liberals is far more fragmented and liberal viewers have far less mindless channel loyalty than conservative viewers do.

You are paying for a whole bunch of channels that you never watch. If you don't like your choices, your service, or your cable provider.... drop it and choose something else.
