Mexico at four weeks pregnant, how concerned to be about food

Anonymous
No salads! I got violently ill in Mexico ... will certainly never forget it.

I was 4 weeks pregnant with twins in Mexico (I didn't know yet!). All I wanted to eat was rice and beans - couldn't stomach anything else. I was fine. Just stick to bland, cooked basics. No dairy, no raw fruits & veg. You will be fine.

Ugh I got food poisoning from going to Cancun years ago and had violent diarrhea on the plane and we only ate in tourist areas. I probably wouldn’t go but that’s just me. It’s almost impossible to follow all the rules of what to avoid eating.

I shouldn't respond to this but I will. I have two toddlers. The last vacation I took was in 2018. My husband and I were both essential workers who went though hell during covid. We saved up and are staying at the Waldorf, the first vacation we've been on solo since our honeymoon. We flew up my in laws and parents to take care of our kids, the first childcare we've had since 2019. Selfish? You bet! Women aren't just vessels for pro creation. I get to have a life too. I would rather drink bottled water and eat saltines the whole time than cancel.

And Zika? There was one confirmed case in Mexico in 2020. Zero in 2021. 50 in 2019 There haven't been Zika cases in Cabo ever.

Troll harder you absolute moron.

Gosh you’re right Mexico is the ONLY place in the WORLD right now to vacation! You’re the moron.

What is your point exactly? Are you implying that Mexico is the only place one can get food poisoning? Or get Zika? That everywhere else is safe?

I was about 6 weeks pregnant in Mexico and had no idea. I was so thirsty all the time and the smell of food was nauseating. I thought it was just being in Mexico and maybe some food poisoning. Found out it was something more when I got home. My 10 year old is perfectly fine.

My guess is you are 57 years old and not a mother.

Ignore the aholes OP and have fun! I would avoid water and fresh produce generally.

+1 DCUM is not representative of most people. Posters on here default to finding any reason to believe a woman is a selfish and terrible mother.

I would avoid all cheese. Google CDC/Listeria/Queso Fresco -- lots of mexican cheese-related outbreaks, even if pasteurized.

I would DEFINITELY go! Have fun OP and ignore the trolls.

Don't drink water from the tap, avoid street vendors and try and have fun! I seriously wouldn't worry about it at all!

~Mom of 3 kids and have had multiple miscarriages who would definitely go at 4 weeks pregnant

No raw fruits and veggies, no ice, no frozen smoothie type drinks, no deli meat, no water, no ceviche, no unpasteurized cheese. Personally, I wouldn’t go because I’d blame myself even if o had a natural m/c which would be very common while you are on your trip.

Lord. People on dcum are so very anxious- to the point of debilitating.

Go, have fun, use common sense.

31 and pregnant with my second. From south Texas where people go to Mexico like they go to Annapolis here. You can practically walk, and it’s well understood you don’t go when you’re pregnant. Moronic.
