How Much Do You Pay Baby Sitter?

Anonymous
lol

My 19-year-old is making $12/hour in the parts department at our local Acura dealership, talking to angry customers all day about why the semiconductor shortage is affecting how long their car repairs will take.

Maybe he should go into baby-sitting!

$13 is a very fair wage for a sitter under 16. I would pay $15 for older teens. I would pay $20 for a young adult. It’s not brain surgery and it’s not taxing work.

Which zip code?

Yes, she should. My 13-year-old makes $15 an hour babysitting. She works pretty much every weekend. An older teen could get more money and more hours easily in our area.

Why would the age of the babysitter make any difference in the pay rate? I could see paying more for more years of experience, but why pay more just for somone who is older? That seems unfair.

14 makes $15/hour babysitting a 4 year old. 14 is raking it in. Has taken the Suburban Hospital babysitting class. And, babysitting $$ is tax free

I don’t know anyone who pays high schoolers more than $10/hour.

I’ve known nannies who were making $15 - $20/hour.

$20 for one kid, no diapers.

Where do you live? I’m in arlington abd haven’t been able to find a sitter willing to take $15 for 10 years. Many sitters want $22-$25 for two kids now.

If you are in the DMV area, those rates are very low. Most nannies charge at least $22/ hour for one kid, and that’s assuming no homework help or cooking.
We have three kids who are upper ES and I pay a HS sitter $20 per hour to do the things OP is describing.

High schoolers in this area are too spoiled to accept $10/hr. If you know teens who will take it you must be somewhere with less spoiled kids.

My 13 year old gets $10 and hour for being a Parent helper. This is in PG County. We initially asked for $7 but the parents said that was too low.

High school sitters in my area all charge $15/hr

Np: I didn’t necessarily pay just on age but it ended up working out that way when my kids were very small (infant/toddler ages). If we were going out for a short time in the evening and left after bedtime, I’d hire a high school girl for less (I think she charged $12/hr). For longer jobs or daytime (when the kids were actually awake) I used an adult sitter who charged $18/hr. Both had their uses in different situations. Those rates are from over 10yrs ago.

On the rare occasion we need a sitter (my DC are 12 and 10 and we just use one if we will be out late)- we use a high school girl who charges $15/hr. She is just here to make sure the house doesn’t burn down etc. lol.

I would not want my teen making more than they make at their first job post college. $20 per hour is ridiculous for a teenager. Especially one who can't drive!
