I don’t know anyone who pays high schoolers more than $10/hour.

I’ve known nannies who were making $15 - $20/hour.

High schoolers in this area are too spoiled to accept $10/hr. If you know teens who will take it you must be somewhere with less spoiled kids.

The market clears where it clears. Supply, demand, and alternative options on both sides affect the price.

This. It’s not a spoiled or not spoiled issue.

A friend just recommended another babysitter (also a preschool teacher) who charges $22 / hr. If a kid couldn’t drive, wasn’t CPR / first aid certified, wasn’t picking up or making dinner I’d probably pay close to their age (so $15 / hr for a 15 year old). It also depends if someone is truly sitting my 4 and 8 year old vs a mother’s helper and needs me home. If I can’t go to a yoga class or out for coffee etc then it’s worth less to me. A neighbor wrote a few of us two years ago that her then 12 year old wanted to me a mother’s helper. I couldn’t leave her with a diapered two year old. I said I’d be happy to hire her at $12 / hr. My neighbor said her said her understanding was that rates were $20 / hr. Needless to say I never hired the daughter.

Whoa. $20 for a 12 yr old Mother’s Helper? That is insane. Did you live in a very wealthy neighborhood where people are pretty frivolous with money?

A few months ago, someone offered my DD $12 an hour to watch 4 kids. I told her to turn it down. $15 an hour seems to be pretty standard in this area. I would expect she’d that that for 2+ kids.

Live in a nice neighborhood in Gaithersburg/North Potomac area and $15 is the going rate.

This is what my teen daughters charge for 1 or 2 kids. We're in Fairfax County, VA.

16-18 I pay $12-13. In college $15

$12 each or together?

My next door neighbor quoted $15/hour (we're in NWDC) but I bumped it up to $20 recently. I have two kids, 3 and 5.

Together. They set their own rate and told me. They actually only asked to $10 hr. They are very motivated and eager to work

Yet you all want to skimp on paying your nannies

Upper NWDC. My 15 yo babysits our next door neighbor kid (early ES age) for $10/hour. The neighbors always round up generously. If my kid were trying to build a business (or talking to a new family), I’d encourage a rate increase, but considering how easy the job is, $10 seems fine for now.

It's amazing.

Area hospital pay ICU RN's (with bachelor's degrees) $25/hour.

So much for going to college or taking care of critically ill patients. I should have saved the money.

Geez. We live in Pennsylvania. My 15 yo makes $10 an hour to watch two kids. Once in a while, she's watched four kids and got $15 an hour.
