I don't think OP said the kid *needs* to wear a dress. Personally my 2 year old asks for dresses because she likes mine. I wear them because they are comfortable.

But you don’t play on a playground for two hours daily. Pp is right. Shorts and tees on girls. Dress is just vanity imposed by society. Give her functional clothes!

Shorts come in pairs. A “short” would only cover one buttock/thigh. So no, you should not put “a bike short” on your daughter. But bike shorts are probably a great idea.

I don’t see how a lightweight cotton dress over a pair of bike shorts is not functional.

Yes, we’ve always done bike shorts under dresses if she’s going to school, daycare, or playground. It’s actually a condition of her wearing a dress in those days because I agree with PPs that it makes it easier to play on equipment or outside, and I don’t want her wearing things that inhibit that.

She never complained about it being too hot over a diaper or pull-up. But if she had, I probably would have just used it as an incentive to potty train! She always has the option to change into something more comfortable.

My oldest daughter would only wear the most cotton play dresses from Hannah Anderson or lands end with shorts underneath. My second daughter would only wear tees and soccer shorts. Kids have different preferences, much like adults. I was just bummed because I saved all those play dresses to hand down for nothing!
The bike shorts also keep stuff like mulch from getting in their underwear when they sit and play in the playground.

Reading comprehension is a tough beast to master. Be kind. The previous poster is still figuring it out.

Yes always shorts over underwear or diapers. It makes them more comfortable going down slides too.

And for all of you saying dresses aren’t comfortable- they are!! Little girls can do anything in short dresses they can do in shorts. My dd prefers dresses and I believe in letting them have choice.

You can get 'cartwheel' shorts from Primary, and even at Target and Walmart. They are just like bike shorts except shorter, to go under a dress.

How is your concern what other people choose to dress their kids in?

No not foe a two year old. Did this when my daughter turned three

Do a thin "cartwheel short" (children's place, old navy, carter's has them for cheap, I also like Primary.com and Lucky & Me brand from Amazon but they're expensive).

Some kids have strong preferences about what they wear. My 8 year old has a friend who will ONLY wear dresses unless she is not allowed (like for sports). She wears bike shorts or leggings underneath for functionality but loves dresses. It's never stopped her from doing anything.

+1 Kids want different things. Not all preferences are imposed by society. To answer OP, mine likes to wear her older brother's old boxers under her dresses. So it's pink flowers on top, dinos underneath. Ha!

Because the longer dresses lead to more injuries when on the playground equipment. They get their feet caught up in them.
