My oldest daughter would only wear the most cotton play dresses from Hannah Anderson or lands end with shorts underneath.  My second daughter would only wear tees and soccer shorts.  Kids have different preferences, much like adults.  I was just bummed because I saved all those play dresses to hand down for nothing!

+1  Kids want different things.  Not all preferences are imposed by society.  To answer OP, mine likes to wear her older brother's old boxers under her dresses.  So it's pink flowers on top, dinos underneath.  Ha![/quote]
