People who name their kids “junior “

I feel the exact opposite. I only like it when it gets to the III or IV. Ezra Stiles got to the 17th.

Again, this is a cultural tradition for some and you real sound bigoted saying a naming tradition is silly.

What’s the point? Unless the first is a significant public figure why would you name your kid after a random person?

How is your father or grandfather a random person? People love and want to honor their relatives even if they aren’t famous.

Shouldn’t the child have been named its own name?

Usually they have nicknames so they do get their own identity:

Robert
Rob
Bob
Robbie
Bobbie
Bo

Thomas
Tom
Tommy

James
Jim
Jimmy

I like it, even though I didn’t have a Junior for myself

My family is like this and it’s not uncommon for us to have a similarly-aged cousin also named after a grandparent or other relative. So you end up being called a nickname or by your middle name anyway.

I just don’t get the idea that the only thing or the main thing that makes you unique in your family is your first name. Growing up there was just so much more emphasis on talents or personality traits. It was a running joke for years that one great-uncle was a notoriously shy bachelor and his namesake was a ladies’ man, but that’s not the only thing or main thing we thought about them. The shy one would play the piano for hours and could learn a new piece of music by ear. He took on financial responsibility for his brother’s widow and children. The ladies’ man was fluent in four languages and tended every family grave with his own two hands.

What are you talking about? My husband was named after his father and grandfather, not random people. So you are saying only famous people should be honored? Don't you understand that for some people the boys have passed down their father's names for generations? Who are you to judge?

DCUM Logic: Never name your son after his father or grandfather (he has the right to be his own person!) BUT it’s great to name him or her an overused, trendy name where there will be three other kids with the same first name in every class they’ll ever be in.

Yes, it is. It’s a monolith with a few outsiders.

Don't do it if you don't like it. And work on accepting that others will have different thoughts, traditions, and culture from your own, and you don't need to "get it."

Except that your baby is a human being. Name your dog any way you want.

What does a dog have to with naming some John Jr.

Name your dog John Jr, name your dog Brixxleigh, name your dog Sophia, name your dog Liza Minnelli, name your dog Dishwasher... You will be the only one dealing with the consequences of “your opinion”. When you’re choosing your child’s name, try to be less selfish.

In most of mainstream US culture, naming your son John, Jr would not be regarded as selfish.

Oh, Jesus, Stop. You really think naming your child after yourself or husband is “selfish”? Grow up.
