John jr or John the second What’s the point? Unless the first is a significant public figure why would you name your kid after a random person?
How is your father or grandfather a random person? People love and want to honor their relatives even if they aren’t famous.
Shouldn’t the child have been named its own name?
Usually they have nicknames so they do get their own identity: Robert Rob Bob Robbie Bobbie Bo Thomas Tom Tommy James Jim Jimmy I like it, even though I didn’t have a Junior for myself
My family is like this and it’s not uncommon for us to have a similarly-aged cousin also named after a grandparent or other relative. So you end up being called a nickname or by your middle name anyway. I just don’t get the idea that the only thing or the main thing that makes you unique in your family is your first name. Growing up there was just so much more emphasis on talents or personality traits. It was a running joke for years that one great-uncle was a notoriously shy bachelor and his namesake was a ladies’ man, but that’s not the only thing or main thing we thought about them. The shy one would play the piano for hours and could learn a new piece of music by ear. He took on financial responsibility for his brother’s widow and children. The ladies’ man was fluent in four languages and tended every family grave with his own two hands.
