You need perspective and maybe a prescription |

I know 3 juniors.
One is a girl. She goes by June, short for junior Two are boys. One goes by JR (initials for junior). The other goes by CJ (first name initial + initial for junior). He has the same first name as his father), but his middle name is actually junior so not the exact same name as his father. People just seem to do whatever |
| This is such an idiotic post. Of course we know why people use family names. Family is important. Traditions are important. If that are not important to you, make up some other name and move along. Op sounds angry and very likely doesn’t have a good relationship with her family. |
She’s mad because her DH and his XW named their son jr and now she thinks her son will be slighted. |
| Narcissism. |
Ok, narcissist. |
What someone calls their child is none of your bloody business. |
That's basically true although in some countries it's against the law to name your kid certain names and the government will veto some choices. So in that case it is someone else's bloody business what you name your child. The idea is pretty much save the child from the idiocy of the parents. We could probably use more of that in the USA. https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/25034/8-countries-fascinating-baby-naming-laws |
How is this bigoted? |
Not selfish, but Trumpish. |
|
If you're going do it, go big.
George Foreman has five sons: George Jr., George III (“Monk”), George IV (“Big Wheel”), George V (“Red”), and George VI (“Little Joey”). |
| We grew up in the middle of the middle class suburbs in the middle of the country. "Jr"s, "III"s etc were either way up or way down the income scale from us. We knew a lot of Catholic families where names were heavily recycled but rarely with a "junior." Usually, names skipped a generation or came from an aunt or some such. And only saints' names, of course. |
|
I'm from the South where this tradition is huge. I knew one guy who was the Fifth so he went by "Quint" which I really like.
In my husband's family the first born son has the same initials but their own first name for six generations. I was NOT going to be the one to break the chain!! |
In the case of naming a child John junior or John the second, the only idiocy is OP’s for thinking this is intrinsically harmful. |
