Deal ipl

My DC said it was distance learning with the teacher sitting behind the class - not even facing them. They all still had their headphones on to listen to the teacher speaking to them bc of group breakouts/split screens. So still virtual learning even though the teacher was in the room.

My kid said it was a giant waste of time. he was really bummed.

I mean, could they have made it more convoluted or pointless? I don't think so.

Meanwhile my middle schooler in a DC private has been back since October and full time (regular schedule) since February. 😫

Has Neal said anything about the staff now being allowed 4 cohorts?

No, it would be impossible to come up with a worse plan. This is the Principal's spite plan for being forced to reopen.

What would that allow practically? Is that what needs to happen for the students to go back multiple days?

Theoretically kids could see their history, English, math and science teachers in person as long as the kids all moved as a group.

How has DCPS allow Deal to do this? They are in the building for only 10% of the week and then only learning virtually?

Why didn’t the Chancellor tell schools to open in a uniform manner?

I don't know. There are a ton of Deal kids who are failing and/or flailing with the virtual learning. These are kids who in typical times were good students.
Deal administration clearly doesn't care if the kids learn or not. Individual teachers do. I'm surprised that DCPS doesn't step in although it's probably very low on their priority list and they probably don't even know.

Previous poster again--
I will say that it's pure insanity and DCPS should step in because teachers are VACCINATED.

I get not wanting to teach back in 2020. But this is now pure and utter incompetence and the at this point it's just an giant F-you at students.

Why is Deal only a half day? There is no afternoon cohort going in for 6th and 7th graders. Why can’t the kids stay for a full day

+1. The Principal and AP's are apathetic at best and came up with this awful plan that they're calling IPL.

I know this is the lamest excuse - I heard it was something about lunch / ability to eat in the building - but do not quote me.

It is not a great situation but I am a big fan of Principal Neal and I know she is in a highly challenging situation. My child is doing IPL on Mondays and she said it was clearly not as good as normal but it was better than doing DL at home. My child has had ups and downs during DL, and we hav worked through a lot. DD is hoping to be able to go a second day, which surprised me given how it is working.

Also, Deal brought back the kids that were struggling the most in the second advisory. It is a huge school and there are huge logistical issues and I suspect also union issues with the teachers.

I completely agree they need to be back to full in person in the fall. I am optimistic that my child will be vaccinated by then and if they still need masks, so be it. If there are kids that still want distance they should have a separate set of teachers for that and then have classes in person for everyone else. If teachers do not want to teach in person at that point they should get another job.
