Atholton is no less of an “upscale money school” than Marriotts Ridge and Glenelg. Don’t know why people talk about Atholton like it’s some poor school or like it has a lot of socio-economic diversity because it’s not true. It’s one of the wealthiest Howard schools and home prices there are high. |
People who remember what Atholton used to be think of it this way. The development in that area is relatively new. |
I know that Atholton was once considered the poor school of HoCo, but for the past 15 years, it has been a quite affluent school. |
| For a million dollars you can get a great house in the Severna Park or Broadneck areas of Anne Arundel. If your kid is someone who might want to do the IB program, then Annapolis could be a great option. |

In Anne Arundel County, people tend to say that Severna Park, Broadneck, Arundel, and South River High Schools are the best in the county. Sometimes Chesapeake High School is included among those schools as well. Personally, I think South River very overrated among locals. The STEM program inflates the test scores of the school, and people in Anne Arundel tend to use the # of white students when defining a “good school,” and I think that’s a huge reason there’s a love-affair with South River HS among the locals. They’re drawn to the whiteness of the school.
Severna Park is considered to be a pressure cooker, though it’s not as bad as Whitman, B-CC, etc. At Severna Park HS, they push students all the students to go to college and don’t really place an emphasis on where to go. At the Ws and B-CC, they push all students to go to college and students feel extra pressure to get into prestigious colleges. Really though, all the high schools in all these counties have a great college prep program, offer tons of APs, and have lots of opportunities. Just find an area you like. |
Look we are zoned for Atholton and it is not in the same wealth category as the Ellicott City high schools and the western county high schools. We have a ton of students that come from the older townhomes along Murray Hill, the apartments near Kings Contrivance, and the surrounding areas. It's regular middle class surburbia. Yes, it is now a step up from the poorer zones it used to be but it has come up to the middle of the road income level. There are some higher priced homes, but nowhere near the amount you can get in the north and west parts of the county. |
Only 8% Atholton HS students receive FARMS, that’s among the lowest of ALL HoCo high schools. That’s lower than half of the high schools in Ellicott City. Atholton pulls from many $1M-$2M home neighborhoods in Fulton, $800k home neighborhoods in Clarksville, and even many of the townhomes that are zoned for it are $450k - almost $600k. Not exactly poor people living in those. Atholton is definitely at least one of HoCo’s UMC high schools, and that was well established during last year’s redistricting fuss. Both Atholton and River Hill families teamed up together to oppose the redistricting. It is noticeably wealthier than other “middle of the road schools” like Hammond, Mount Hebron, and Reservoir. It cannot be placed in the same category as those schools. IMO, Atholton and Howard HS are between the middle of the road and highly wealthy schools in terms of SES. |
We're zoned for South River and our children will not be attending - just not a fan of the student population. The only HS in AA Co I would even consider is Severna Park. But that makes for a less than ideal commute into DC. And AACPS is a joke - they will be lucky to get the high schools open for full time, five day a week learning in the next two years. |
| Poolesville HS. Full stop. |
Why would you only send your kids to Severna Park? That school is even more homogenous and racist than South River. Their county council district elected a full fledged white supremacist the second to last election, and a guy with ties to a white supremacist group stabbed a Black student to death on UMD’s campus in 2017. Just because they have more money doesn’t mean they’re a better school and social environment for minorities. I would only send kids to Arundel, Crofton, or Broadneck HS in Anne Arundel County. The academics at those schools are good and there is some diversity and open mindedness at those schools. |
Severna Park is nice if you like an area that is 90% white where 50% of the people who graduate from Severna Park High School attend Anne Arundel Community College for a semester before dropping out and becoming an office assistant or real estate agent for the rest of their life, and most of the other 50% go to Salisbury or Towson. Most of the people that live there are from there and that’s why they think it’s some rich white la la land even though it’s not very different from the surrounding areas socio-economically, save for Severna Park having 0 poor people. I grew up there and there’s much better areas in AA County with more diversity and a way better commute to DC. |

One big issue with Howard County is that it likes to rezone a lot. I feel like they rezone every 5 years. They just finished rezoning, and they're going to rezone again when HS13 finally opens.
Atholton is one of the schools that sits somewhat in the middle, so it's a prime target for rezoning. Otherwise, it's not a bad school. A lot of the population and overcrowding pressure is coming from the East side, so the further West you go the less your chances of getting rezoned. If commute isn't a factor, I'd choose among Marriotts Ridge, River Hill or Reservoir depending on your school preferences and price point. The closer you buy to the school the better. Glenelg isn't necessarily a bad school, but it's very white, and many of houses there rely on well water. Not my cup of tea. |
This is so untrue. Severna Park is an amazing school and many of the students from there attend very competitive colleges. It’s true that there’s other amazing schools in AACo besides Severna Park and that one should not only limit their children to Severna Park schools, but to say that 50% of SPHS grads go to AACC and drop out and that the other half mostly go to Salisbury/Towson is very very very dishonest. |
Yes, it does but there has never been a year where HoCo dominates the top 5 or top 10. For the last three years at least, only one HoCo school made the top 10. |

Does anyone else find this post confusing?
What are you looking for, OP? A mediocre public school district? A mediocre private school? You don’t want dc, Bethesda, Chevy chase. You ant a plus schools but not a pressure E tend to go hand in hand. |
