In Anne Arundel County, people tend to say that Severna Park, Broadneck, Arundel, and South River High Schools are the best in the county. Sometimes Chesapeake High School is included among those schools as well. Personally, I think South River very overrated among locals. The STEM program inflates the test scores of the school, and people in Anne Arundel tend to use the # of white students when defining a “good school,” and I think that’s a huge reason there’s a love-affair with South River HS among the locals. They’re drawn to the whiteness of the school. Severna Park is considered to be a pressure cooker, though it’s not as bad as Whitman, B-CC, etc. At Severna Park HS, they push students all the students to go to college and don’t really place an emphasis on where to go. At the Ws and B-CC, they push all students to go to college and students feel extra pressure to get into prestigious colleges. Really though, all the high schools in all these counties have a great college prep program, offer tons of APs, and have lots of opportunities. Just find an area you like.
We're zoned for South River and our children will not be attending - just not a fan of the student population. The only HS in AA Co I would even consider is Severna Park. But that makes for a less than ideal commute into DC. And AACPS is a joke - they will be lucky to get the high schools open for full time, five day a week learning in the next two years.
Why would you only send your kids to Severna Park? That school is even more homogenous and racist than South River. Their county council district elected a full fledged white supremacist the second to last election, and a guy with ties to a white supremacist group stabbed a Black student to death on UMD’s campus in 2017. Just because they have more money doesn’t mean they’re a better school and social environment for minorities. I would only send kids to Arundel, Crofton, or Broadneck HS in Anne Arundel County. The academics at those schools are good and there is some diversity and open mindedness at those schools.
