Which historical measure do you use for an armed insurrection on the US Capitol to disrupt the peaceful transition of power? |
Who was armed? The protestors did not fire a shot. As far as overall violence and destruction goes, literally hundreds of US riots have been worse. As I already said, there was additional symbolic force to this one given the location and disruption of Congress. But just so we’re clear: Jim Bob the cosplay warrior wasn’t going to seize control of the country. They weren’t backed by a military. You’re all giving these dopes way too much credit. |
Lots of people. See the federal charges. Also, stop minimizing. It's indefensible. |
Knowing many Trump supporters, this does not make me feel better. The ones I know are the dumbest of the dumb. I would either have a gun or get out of town. |
The FBI thinks differently. https://www.nytimes.com/live/2021/01/13/us/capitol-investigation?referringSource=articleShare#fbi-and-us-officials-urge-police-chiefs-to-be-prepared-and-share-intelligence |

I'll bite - we have three kids and we live in a close-in DC suburb. January 6 was supposed to be impossible too. There are more law enforcement officials in DC now, but apparently some of them have a propensity for waiving insurgents through.
We're headed out of town early next week. Driving distance, rental house, and we'll hunker down there as much as we would here. We'll be back after inauguration. Paranoid? Probably. But I can live with that. |
I’m a pretty fearful person, and I don’t get this. I live in a condo building in Arlington. I am afraid for our democracy, but I’m not afraid for my personal safety. I don’t plan to go mix with the crowd. I can’t see the protestors breaking into random homes and apartment buildings. They have a political message. And then sometimes there is rioting or looting during these things — that affects businesses. I don’t see how people inside their homes are at risk. But if someone has other information, please tell me, because I’m a single mom with a young child. |
What is it that you think is going to happen that will make it dangerous simply to be in the area? I live in the District right near a major upper NW thoroughfare and a Metro station, and I'm not at all worried about my personal safety next week. There's no reason for right-wing militias to start marauding through residential neighborhoods, their goal is to disrupt the inauguration. |
You have absolutely nothing to worry about. The people talking about “evacuating” are nutters. They love the drama. |

Unless you live a few blocks from the Capitol, you should be fine. I highly doubt there will be civil unrest in the townhouse communities of Rockville and Gaithersburg.
If things get rough, jump in your car and head up 95 or 270 and you can be out of town in a matter of minutes. |
Do you think Lincoln park area is far enough not to be worried? I feel like it will be ok but my neighbors are leaving. |
We’re going for our kids sake - a long weekend skiing will help keep them distracted. I’m not worried about our personal safety. I worry that images, video clips, people on our block chatting will scare them. They’re young, their family members work at the Capitol, we picnic on the mall, ride scooters at the Capitol. I don’t want them to be scared to have those experiences again in the Spring. Mental health has been a priority for us this year and this is just another weird decision I’d never make without the last 10 months having happened. |
Oh, that's totally different -- makes sense. |
Hi neighbor, like a PP we are leaving mostly for mental health reasons, but also feeling a bit on edge with safety. Living on the Hill, I'm concerned with two things - just general spillover violence (there were a lot of proud boys roaming the neighborhood last time) and bombs. I think they are both quite unlikely though. It's mostly that I just can't keep my toddler indoors for five days and don't want my older child to feel overwhelmed by the big police presence. We're turning it into a driving vacation. I think it will be good for all of us. |
+1 This is my feeling. I’m not scared about violence but we have a toddler and if they enact another curfew or something I don’t want to be stuck in the house for five days with her. She’s also much happier being able to play outside. |
