| Drinking by Landon MS along with Stone Ridge and Holton. It's in private and public. |

I agree it's very common in Moco/DC. If our child is drinking, I am unaware about it. But, we've had many, many discussions.
There was a thread on here a couple years ago about a lot of private 7th graders at the "White Party" being heavily intoxicated. |
| This isn’t new. I remember that kids started drinking when I was in middle school. That was when I broke from my elementary school friends because that was the crowd they were veering towards. |
And that was the early 90s in Midwestern suburbia |
| I think MS drinking happened more frequently when we were growing up. Now it’s quite rare. Agree that vaping does happen (pre covid..when kids were actually in school & hanging out). |
| In the 80's kids were drinking in MS. The only new thing is the sexting. We didn't have that, thank goodness. |
Quite rare! LOL. You are in denial. |
Not the norm. In college, I knew one person who had started drinking at 12 and was in rehab at 14. But I’ve been a middle school teacher for 20 years and never had a student that we knew was drinking. It’s pretty much all weed. My own kids (late 20s to early teens) say alcohol starts in HS and it is much more common for kids to do weed, ADHD medication, or cough syrup in middle school. |
| They are binge drinking on weekends. Not coming into class on the daily drunk. |
| I agree. It is common in Middle School. It's easy to access if it is int he home. Vaping, pills, and weed also occur, but they have to buy these from someone, usually a high schooler that went to the middle school. |
| I'm told HS and MS dealers use snapchat to display their supply and price. |
Pills at home are easy. |
| Wow this is crazy of its happening in middle school. These are just kids we're talking about. |
Well, in 1991, when I was in MS, it wasn't uncommon. In fact, I've been under the impression that underage drinking (and teenage sex) have declined compared to 30 years ago... |
I'm not so sure. It will depend on where you grew up etc. The MS I went to had a handful of kids who smoked and drank (and smoked dope). They all wore heavy metal t shirts had long greasy hair and jeans - girls and boys. That was it. Maybe some nasty preppies were also drinking and smoking at this time, just less obviously. It was more a social "group" dynamic than 2s and 3s of friends. It was in HS that it really kicked off. |
