3.4 uw 3.8 w, 1250 SAT, typical sport and club type activities
typical suburban white kid

He’s a junior. We don’t know where to start. What medium-big solid schools anywhere within 8 hours driving distance would he definitely get into?

lol your kid is above average. get a grip.

1250 SAT is not "above average." I had that 20 years ago and I struggled to get into good schools. And it has become insanely competitive since then.

To be exact it is almost 200 points above average. But what a cool fun story you have.

I think OP means average for this board, where every poster has a kid with an A average from a "big 3" private school, 1500 SAT, and they're still worried.

Not according to her OP:
“ And when I say average, I mean actually average. Not DCUM average”

To quote OP's original post, "And when I say average, I mean actually average. Not DCUM average?"

So...no?

I think this thread highlights what happens when out of towners use the DCUM boards. You don’t know the area, so you ruin a thread with arguing irrelevant points.

+ 1

-100 87% of SAT test takers score at or below 1260. It’s above the FCPS average, too.

I'm not sure why you assume the people arguing that a literal national average is actually average are from out of town.

Perhaps we just attend schools and live in neighborhoods with people who are less privileged and slightly less educated than many DCUM posters?

I'm a high school magnet parent who is also a tenured professor who lives in a diverse local community. I think I can speak to what constitutes average high school performance, but if I can't, perhaps actually statistics can.

So how do we rectify this list of 80% acceptance rate schools, which actually would be match schools for the Op’s kid, with all the posters saying that the kid is well above average and can go anywhere? You honestly can’t do much better than these with those stats.

A 1250 SAT is by definition above average. It's the 81st percentile. My kids all got in the 1200s and 1300s and all got into selective -- even highly selective -- colleges. You must have been lacking elsewhere if you "struggled."

lol at the idea that a 1300 is going to get you into a top 20 school. Probably not even top 30.

Allegheny, Gannon, Mercyhurst (all in PA), St. Michael’s in VT, Castleton State (both in VT), Canisus, SUNY Geneseo, Alfred State (all in NY), Randolph Macon, CNU, ODu (all in VA).

Apply to private and public. See what you get in aid (merit and financial). Too many parents are instate only or state only and don’t realize privates will work with you.

Good luck!
