Of course as long as you consider other factors as well-SES, employment, gender, age, etc......... |
What’s SES, age, gender have to do with wearing a mask properly? |
What does Ward Whatever have to do with mask wearing? Again, if you want to categorize please do so scientifically. |
I mean, you're not actually dim enough to think this is the point, right? |
The previous poster was trying to make the (stupid) argument that young people aren’t making the right risk assessment. The reality is that they are making the right assessment for themselves. Their risk is so low, that wearing masks and socially distancing doesn’t make any difference for them. Maybe their decisions have negative effects on other people. But, it’s not like older people would be willing to make any sacrifices for younger folks in our society. |
7, 8, same same |
There are good arguments to be made that those factors MIGHT impact “correct” mask wearing in systematic ways, so if Wards are going to be looked at as meaningful entities, other factors need to be looked at and possibly controlled for as well. As a made up example: let’s say that males between 13 and 35 are less likely to wear masks correctly, while females over 35 are much more likely to wear masks correctly. If the sample from Group A included 75% males between 13 and 35 and Group B included 75% females over 35, any conclusions drawn from the data might strongly reflect the impact of age x gender — rather than geographic location. Similarly, SES might account for things like access to masks, types of employment, tendency for the observers to document “correctness”.... stuff like that. If you’re going to do a study and release the data, it would be useful to have the kind of information that would contribute to being able to understand the data in meaningful ways. If the goal is “correct” mask wearing, for example, it could be important to know that everyone is on the same page with what that means and has access to masks. It could also be helpful to know if the observations were consistent. So, were all observations made in supermarkets — where more people might be trying to wear masks in ways that they believed were “correct”? Were observations made at Metro stations — where huge swaths of the population might NOT be observed if they had access to safer transportation options. Stuff like that? A critical point is access to masks that have been found to be safe. Since we’re on our own with regard to this, whatever “correct” mask wearing means should be understood in this context. |
The “older people” I know spend much of their lives making sacrifices of different kinds for younger folks in our society— some deliberately and some less so. While some of us hope it will benefit us as a part of our society as a whole, think about all the tax dollars that support schools that come from people who can’t benefit directly from this resource themselves. Think about people who make less money than they otherwise could to work in areas that are child-focused. I, personally, have spent a lot of time, money, and emotional commitment with children. I could have definitely used my time and money in different ways. But I might be agreeing with you — since I don’t view doing these things as a sacrifice. |

What value is this mask usage survey? Seriously.
I hope that it created some part time work for folks who were unemployed. But other than that? There is no enforcement for not wearing a mask. Bowser just loves her task forces - all meaningless (DC Faces as an example of wasting resources). |
The dirty secret is that any enforcement of mask mandates and social distancing rules would fall disproportionately on young AA men. Just like any other law enforcement initiative in our country. So, no way is a Mayor like Bowser going to tell her police to start that enforcement. |
No jurisdiction in the area is going to have the police start enforcing any mask mandate on anyone. Those who don’t want to follow the mandate know this and will do what they want. |
NP here. I see, so we are supposed to consider "other factors" when assessing mask compliance. But when it comes to impact of covid on AA community, it's because of racism. |
It's of great value if you believe that mask wearing slows the spread of covid. Less mask compliance would then result in higher impact. this study tells us that there needs to be more pressure and education about mask wearing in wards with low compliance rates. It also tells you that covid is not caused by racism. |
Sure. I’ve never worn a mask outside and I never will. I don’t care what the government in DC, Maryland or Virginia have to say to the contrary. |
Bizarre statement. DO you seriously think a glossy PDF will change the minds of the non-mask wearing group? Waste of money. |
