My other hypothesis has to do with age. Wards 4 and 8 have a high population of kids and teens relative to other wards. Young people are always poor at gauging risk. Further compounding the problem, there has been a lot of messaging in the pandemic about how young people don’t get as sick and how schools should be safe. It’s easier to rationalize not wearing an uncomfortable mask when this is what you’ve heard.
Young people are at very low risk from this virus. A teenager who doesn’t wear a mask is assessing their risk correctly.
I mean, you're not actually dim enough to think this is the point, right?
The previous poster was trying to make the (stupid) argument that young people aren’t making the right risk assessment. The reality is that they are making the right assessment for themselves. Their risk is so low, that wearing masks and socially distancing doesn’t make any difference for them. Maybe their decisions have negative effects on other people. But, it’s not like older people would be willing to make any sacrifices for younger folks in our society.
The “older people” I know spend much of their lives making sacrifices of different kinds for younger folks in our society— some deliberately and some less so. While some of us hope it will benefit us as a part of our society as a whole, think about all the tax dollars that support schools that come from people who can’t benefit directly from this resource themselves. Think about people who make less money than they otherwise could to work in areas that are child-focused. I, personally, have spent a lot of time, money, and emotional commitment with children. I could have definitely used my time and money in different ways. But I might be agreeing with you — since I don’t view doing these things as a sacrifice.
