Hogan Democrats in Maryland: Would you support another Republican governor?

On one hand, it was incredibly petty and expensive for him to cut the Red Line after the 2015 unrest... But on the other, there was levelheaded local opposition to it that the "white butterfly"-dwelling liberals ignored or dismissed. In general, on the broad issue of the hellhole that is Baltimore, he's been no different than most governors. O'Malley was the last one who gave a hoot, but only because his political success was rooted in putting a dent in the city's horrendous problems... Other than that, Hogan's been no different. Punish the city leadership when something really awful happens, but otherwise, kick the can down the road.

Hogan's handling of the virus hasn't really blown me away. It's great this state was one of the first to respond to it, but the stunt with the tests being flown directly from Seoul or wherever, eh. I also roll my eyes when he does his whole "standing up to Trump as a Principled Republican" business.

The Democrats here need to put up guys who aren't empty suits like Anthony Brown or Ben Jealous. Larry Hogan ran on a platform that didn't seem to completely revolve around universal pre-k, so he was able to get my vote just for having slightly more depth on state issues.

"white-L", rather than "white butterfly" I meant to say. Still waking up LOL

Yes. Because of Hogan my kid has been able to go to school since September. Under a Newsom dem would have been a different story. Voted for Biden BtW.

He has directed public contracts worth tens of millions of dollars to Sam Malhotra, his former head of the department of Human Resources and chief of staff.

He made a big show of buying tests from South Korea that cost millions of dollars and were ultimately never used.

He canceled the red line and screwed up the purple line, costing the state millions.

He cut education funding so that more of our children can grow up without critical thinking and therefore vote Republican.

It’s grifters all the way down. Obviously Republicans need some remedial ethics training and I will not vote for them until they have it.

You don't sound like someone who would ever consider voting for a Republican. And that's fine, but let's not pretend that your vote was or ever will be in play.

I’m talking about my specific issues with Hogan. Graft should not be accepted by any politician, Republican or Democrat. This tolerance for this behavior is why Maryland has so many issues with corruption.

You took a very partisan stance on all of the items you listed. Only the most egregious of which is claiming that he tried to rob children of critical thinking skills so they would vote Republican.

That's not someone who simply takes issues with specific actions of one politician. That's someone with a pronounced idealogical edge who almost certainly would not look at the same events the same way if someone in his own party was the one in power.

Again, there are plenty of partisan Democrats and Republicans who will vote for the party in virtually every circumstance, but they are really not the people being addressed by this thread.

I would vote for another centrist Republican in Maryland. The candidate would need to clearly have been anti-Trump. I consider myself a left leaning democratic moderate.

That was tongue in cheek but whatever, you are clearly an analytical genius.

I agree that he's unethical with respect to how he directs public funds, but as someone who's been involved in Maryland politics for decades, this is a systemic issue and not a party issue. In fact, you will find more democrat crooks than republicans, simply because there are more democrats in office.

Absolutely NOT! I didn’t support THIS current one.

I take it you will enjoy Peter Franchot’s upcoming landslide victory.

Ugh I hate Franchot but you might be right

He voted for "Ronald Reagan". He is shit and dead as far as I am concerned.

I am never voting for a Republican again. I will vote for an environmentalist over a Dem or Republican.

This is true for me as well. I did not vote for Hogan in his first election but I did second time because I am not voting for a dem running on Bernie’s platform. Hopefully we wind up with a better dem candidate this time.

Of course. Show me a good candidate who is moderate, gives a damn about BLM, willing to do massive police reform, is tough on crime, works for improving and funding public education, is for environmental causes, forsakes Trump and White supremacists. He can be against Gay Marriage in churches that does not allow it but gives them civil marriage rights and benefits. He can be against Abortions in late term, but supports sex education and birth control methods. Someone who is willing to not be LQGBTQ community be targeted. Someone who can celebrate diversity. Someone who is not racist or misogynist. Someone who is not a Nazi. Someone who is for the 2nd amendment but also wants lots of control and checks for gun ownership AND bans assault weapons and other military kind of weaponry.

Any Republican that does that gets my vote

I support the best fit. Hogan is about business, not people. He failed us when he lifted restrictions and all that.
