A *volunteer* social worker. Remember, police are no longer worthy of a salary in the eyes of the Woke White Left.

lol wut

Right wingers are either too ignorant to understand what "defund the police" actually means or are fully aware and as usual making bad faith arguments to "stick it to the libs," all the while demanding that we reach across the aisle and "be civil" despite spending the past 4 years "making liberals cry again" and insisting liberals have no right to their opinions because "elections have consequences."

In this case it's almost certainly the latter, a cop worshipping bootlicker who sees law enforcement not a means to respectfully keep the peace but as a force whose main purpose is to brutalize and punish anyone different from them for having the audacity to exist while poor and/or black or brown. Their fragile worldview is threatened by the possibility of treating poor and marginalized people as victims of a failed system who need extra help instead of born criminals, so they misrepresent any plan to change the current broken system in a pathetic and impotent attempt to justify their classism and racism, and cling to their outdated and antiquated notion of "us vs. them."

It isn't just rightwingers who think the whole "defund the police" thing is ill-advised. Those of us on the moderate left see it as the product of an academic bubble that has lost touch with reality. Low income neighborhoods want more and better policing, not less. The real victims here are the ones who are oppressed by crime, not the criminals...

+1. I wish the far left would realize they can be just as polarizing as the far right. (This is coming from a Trump hating, Biden voting DC resident)

Meanwhile 2 firefighters "respectfully keeping the peace" were shot this week WHILE treating someone who had been shot. Dont see you seething about that. However, Newsham has been speaking out right and left for all gunshot victims in our city to anyone who will listen. Which ^ shock^ doesnt include DC wokedom or our Council.

In the eyes of Charles Allen, dimwitted Brianne Nadeau and Janeese, the real victims here are the shooters. not the people they shot.

The shooters ARE the victims. If you don't get that, maybe you have been asleep the past twenty years. And certainly this past summer. Look past your own blinders.

You are correct that low-income neighborhoods want better policing. But we also reminisce about the days when the community was vibrant and whole and young kids had resources and opportunities like local jobs. Combining that with increased mental health support, massive education reform and the ability to make a living wage on one salary would get the ball rolling in the right direction and eventually leaf to less policing.

Not when you consider the nightmare it's going to be working within the dysfunctional, "woke" city that is DC. Sounds like a logical way to take a slight salary cut, while maintaining your sanity.

Exactly. Less stress, gets to collect retirement and a new salary. A win all the way around.

I agree with you 100%. And they are doing damage that they don't see, which will hurt communities of color, the ones they are trying to help.

local jobs = start in the kitchen like everyone else, work your way up
mental health support = a cause everyone would agree on, but not a cause liberals support "civil liberties".
massive education reform = it happened. NCLB, Michelle Rhee, Charters, Vouchers, Fenty's city-wide rec centers, school renovations, free metro and bus for kids = options. More work to be done? Sure. But education "reform" has been underway for years and years.
make a living wage on one salary = average sanitation worker salary in DC = 42,000 a year/20 bucks an hour.

Liberals have run DC for over 50 years. If they cared deeply about further advancing any of the above, they'd put it into motion.

This. No sane person would want that job now. Which is an immediate insight into whoever takes that job next.

He should immediately suspend all protective details and priority response for members of the council, until his last day.
