Teacher playing a Taylor Swift video

Answer this please OP. Then let us decide if it was appropriate.

I say this Taylor Swift, love or hate her, is pretty clean with her lyrics, on stage performances/concerts, music videos.

Also, name the school district.

Otherwise, it didn't happen.

This is what teachers get for insisting on virtual education. Parents watching their lessons. They have no one to blame but themselves.

That said. TS videos are all very PG. she intentionally markets to the upper ES age range and I’ve never seen anything she does that isn’t safe for them to view. I assuming it’s a short, mouthed closed kiss and not a passionate, younger involved, taking clothes off.

We’d need more context. What is the video/song? How old is your kid? 8? 12? I’d hope a sixth grader could deal with a TS video. Why was it used? Were kids doing something with analysis of the lyrics? Some of the TS songs are smarter than your average pop star. It could be a fun activity. Was it a five minute movement break— dance and listen to the lyrics? I think those types of things are great for ES.

Mostly in DL, I’m keeping my powder dry. When you gripe about little stuff, no one takes you seriously for big stuff. Unless this teacher is teaching “Textual Analysis in Pop Sings” I would let an isolated occurrence go.

PS— if you think TS level kissing is a problem for 6th grade, wait until you get a load of R&J in 9th (they usually show the video) or the Handmaids Tale in 10-12.

I hope you don’t disapprove of my movement breaks in kindergarten. Actually I don’t care if you do.

Um I have done this. In a mini lesson it can be helpful to show how a reading or literary technique is used in something familiar, like a song. I have used lyrics to practice as a group identifying imagery and all kinds of things with kids before having them do it in a text. It activates background knowledge and engages them before you apply it independently in a text. It’s a good instructional technique. Get a life and let her teach.

I mean, isn't TS latest album called Folklore? Maybe they're analyzing the lyrics, it's basically a form of poetry. Or maybe something in the video references something in whatever they're reading. Relax, OP.

It could be any song or album. If kids were reading Romeo and Juliet you could use Love Story since it’s an allusion. I’ve used some of her songs with The Crucible. Paired texts to apply theme across genre. OP is going to look like a damn idiot if she complains about this, it is sound teaching. Intro the concept, show kids how they already recognize it or do it in something familiar/accessible, then model transferring the skill. This is a R E A C H .

Contact the teacher. Not random online folks. Be an adult.

As critical as I've been of DL, I really don't see the problem here. At least, the OP has not provided any information that would lead me to believe this was inappropriate.

Lucky. My 10 and 12 yo would pay more attention if that was their class. Whenever I walk by on a break from work both are barely watching what’s going on. Good for this teacher for doing something to capture their attention. My standards have changed right now.

My DD's teacher did this last year i think - it was tied into analyzing the message and perhaps part of poetry unit? It wasn't like they watched videos of musicians all the time - it was a one off thing. I think it was pre-covid.

Shake it off, OP
