Explicit Dyslexia Instruction in Loudoun County

I had one student have a goal to have NO errors after self editing a paragraph. Ridiculous. The kids I know who have made good progress with dyslexia got outside support at Lindamood Bell.

I like this goal. The school will have to keep helping until the student meets it.

It was a first quarter goal in 9th grade. Self editing for zero errors in 5/5 opportunities is not an appropriate starting goal for a student with a disability like dyslexia.

Another teacher who agrees.

Except, I don't like the use of the term "goal." Shouldn't all of us have the goal of writing perfectly? Few may reach it, but shouldn't that be our goal?

I wish they would eliminate that term's usage for this purpose. But, no one will listen to me.

I saw Jeff locked your thread in the special needs board.

The LCPS push for OG sounds good, but I haven’t heard of anyone’s child who actually received the service. At a minimum trained teachers might not do harm to the work you accomplish with private tutoring.

Real OG training/ certification takes a graduate level course and supervised practicum hours. It isn’t something that is accomplished in a 2-hour PD session. It should be accompanied by appropriate curriculum too, especially if the training is less than optimal.

What terminology would you prefer for IEPs instead of goal?

Also, in FCPS any of the Wilson and Voyager Sporis programs are based on OG - any SPED teacher who has been trained in the programs would know that as it's mentioned in all of the trainings (FCPS SPED teacher who is trained in FUNdations, Just Words, Read Well and Language! - and has an Orton background from outside of FCPS).

Just Words is not for dyslexia. Wilson even says so. It is hard to get any good info from teachers in FCPS. They don’t care about dyslexia and lie there way through it

It is their tier 2 program - the full Wilson program is for tier 3 (Dyslexia) in FCPS that would be Language! or Read Well (the Voyager Spris programs) but the decoding part of Just words and Fundations is almost identical to the decoding for OG. As I mentioned in my previous post I have OG experience and a strong background of dyslexia knowledge - (not just from FCPS).

There are plenty of parents of Dyslexic kids who post on here that don’t like OG either... It is a tough issue and many parents are super upset about the instruction their kid receives at school from any county. I would look into private tutoring/school. I had a kid I taught who’s brother went to the Lab school For dyslexia and the parents were happy, but honestly Op from just what people post on here, no one is happy in MCPS, LCPS or FCPS with or without OG.

I said that literally on page one but here we are. Dyslexia requires outside special help if you can afford it. Public schools do not have the programs or structures or dedicated time to work with just dyslexia. Students who actually make real progress are ones who get outside support.

All dyslexic kids do not have the same degree of issues. Over the years, I taught two kids who were very dyslexic. They were both extremely bright, but struggled with reading. One of the most disturbing parts was that, since they were so bright, they were very aware of struggling to read. Both had great intellectual curiosity.

This was some years ago. I sure hope a lot more is known about helping kids like these. Little was known with the first child I ran across. I moved and i understand that the next year, he was placed in a special school that was doing a study to help kids like him. The other child where I taught later also received a lot of additional help--but, again, this was years ago. Again, I moved away but I understand that he was still struggling four years later.

Testing for dyslexia and learning disabilities has improved since those days, but there are still some foggy areas Identifying and remediating are two different things. I sure hope this program is that good because it is very sad for some of those kids.

Curious about the parents of dyslexic kids who don’t like OG- what do they prefer?

I think it is more that the parents don’t’ like the kind/level of certification the school system has and therefore feel they need to get an OG tutor who is better trained in their mind. There are different companies that offer different levels of training, so all OG isn’t the same from what I understand.

You can do it at home using Barton. The program is $$ but entirely scripted and then your kid would essentially have daily 1 on 1 tutoring.

Don't listen to any of the teachers. Most are not trained in any sort of reading program that is backed by science. We have had a terrible time in FCPS and I do not recommend it.

Oh that is really true. Some districts send teachers to a 1 hour virtual OG overview session and call that OG training. So I completely understand that concern.
