What is the going babysitting rate for a 9th grader?

Our awesome sitter is in college now. When I started using her she was 13 - I paid $10 an hour if I was home and a bit more if we went out she took my kids to the park. As she got older and we had another kid it went to about $15 an hour when she could really be on her own with both girls. By summer before college I was doing $18 and hour. I also tip / give gifts multiple times a year (bday; Xmas; graduation). She babysat for us about 15 hours a month so often, but not all the time.

I had a Neighboor 6th grader charge $10.00 and I thought it was too much for a first gig for a child. And that was for a child who was 8y old... and I had to drive her home on top of it all.

Anyway, I wouldn't mind paying $15 for a HS kid, but I won't pay $10.00 for a 6th grader that pretty much needs direction about everything and what to do. After she/he has more experience under their belt and are more than a body to make sure a child is not home alone and they both spend the time watching tv...no, thanks.

Good for her but I am not using a 12 or 13 year old babysitter regularly. for 20 bucks I'm much happier paying the lady who works at their daycare for night baby sitting since I want to be able to call and say "we hit traffic, will be 30 minutes late" or whatever without then having to deal with the parents of my babysitter.

Why do you car as long as the teen has reliable transportation? How discriminatory.

I'm guessing it means the babysitter with the car can drive the kids places, so s/he gets paid more. Or the person doesn't have to pick them up and drop them off for the babysitting gig.

$100 an hour. It's COVID, Arlington and parents will lose their jobs if your kid does not provide childcare.

Reliable transportation means the babysitter isn’t asking the parent they’re babysitting for for a ride.

+1. Unless a back up or a mid-day event on a weekend I am not interested in babysitters who are not autonomous and need parental permission, etc.

Its worth the extra $2-3 bucks an hour

Uhh you did +1 but I literally said the exact opposite of what you said. My niece who passed the license test but is essentially incapable of driving independently “drives” to her babysitting jobs but really her parent drives and parks far away the whole time. She’s never had a snag in this so far.

My daughter is almost 13 and is a very popular babysitter. Because she’s young she plays a lot with the kids and doesn’t sit on her phone. Also a lot of ppl only can justify $10 an hour which is what she gets, and she will come for short periods of time (mostly in the neighborhood on foot/bike). A lot of older teenagers I have found are too busy to be free on short notice and won’t bother for only 2 hours. Mine is thrilled for $20 lol.

Generally girls her age aren’t really for date night though, more for sahm wanting an outing, or to help entertain while working at home. A lot of her jobs I’m friends with the parents that’s how she gets jobs

I have a 6th grader and I agree. Also, I wouldn’t let my 6th grader babysit alone. Mother’s helper while mom was home? Yes, and no more than $8/hr.

After that, it would depend on experience.

I guess the pay is what the market supports. In plenty of places kids much older than 13 happily work for $7.25/hr.

Western Fairfax County. Pre-Covid I was paying $15-20 per hour for two elementary aged kids. They were pretty independent and only I needed someone to make sure they didn’t burn the house down. It was hard to find any teens to commit for babysitting since they are all busy with sports and band. Parents around here pay whatever they want since it is so hard to find reliable people.

We paid our 9th grade babysitter $12.50/ hr to babysit this summer while we were WFH. When she babysits on weekend nights we pay her $15/hr
