New school in Palisades

Move the Hardy kids to the new GDS campus and alleviate over crowding at deal-move some schools that serve Deal to Hardy?

That was my assumption. It's geographically awkward -- although PP that made the point about the bus lines -- buses can be moved.

Based on geography alone, it would make sense that we'd see Key, Hyde-Addison, and Mann go to the new MS.
Stoddert, Eaton, Hearst and Bancroft to Hardy, plus any Oyster kids that didn't want to go on to Adams.
Janney, Lafayette, Murch and Shepherd to Deal.

BUT that only moves Hearst and Bancroft out of Deal, which doesn't help much -- Hearst is small (50 kids per class) and won't really make a dent.

Maybe it would be better as a high school? Route ONLY Deal to Wilson, and route Hardy to a new HS?

DCPS had proposed building a new ES on the hardy park land. (Noting in park To give people something to be more angry about than lab having old hardy). That is the only feasible thing they would consider For the gds building. Mary chef has never proposed an idea ward 3 schools That has actually happened. And there have been lots and lots of them.

The palisades neighborhood has blocked lab from doing renovations on the hardy building. The GDS Davenport site was renovated a few years ago. It’s in better shape and cheaper than starting from scratch.

Davenport? This is about Macarthur.

"there's money in the budget." Does that mean "we could afford this" or "we have set the money aside right here for this and are doing it"?

The ESs in the ward are all too small and overcrowded, so that says nothing.

New High school? It would make a lot of sense, too.

Well, I think they had that plan to make Foxhall Elementary, so instead of doing that, they'd just buy this one instead. So it's "in the budget".

Oh, yikes.

What would actually make sense would be to :
First, get both buildings,
Then, move Hardy MS back into Old Hardy,
And make GDS building a new magnet elementary (Montessori? multiple Language immersion tracks?)
And, Put a HS at Hardy,
Finally, extend a g*dd*mn metro line to Georgetown, because why even create a BLM plaza on 16th st and talk about systemic racism if our public infrastructure perpetuates segregation.

Lab has 90 kids at old Hardy. It is barely big enough for a public elementary. There's no way a middle school would fit.

I think it's closer to 60. But the Hardy site is 6.5 acres, bigger than the Ellington site and bigger than the Hardy Middle School site. The GDS site is 5.7 acres. Three schools on the two sites is not out of the question.

I mean this is radical but it seems to me we need to split up the 2 biggest schools Janney and Lafayette from Deal -Stoddert to the new GDS site and then Janney to Hardy.

Not happening, pure fantasy. The Lafayette PTA would lawyer up like mad.

If the objective is to alleviate overcrowding at the middle schools (Deal and Hardy), there needs to be hard conversations that no one is going to have because they are hard.

You can fix some of it right now - stop grandfathering 16th St Heights and Crestwood to Deal. There is no reason why students can not go to West or MacFarland Middle School.
Change feeders:
Based on locations - the logical move is to move Shepard to Wells and Bancroft feeds to MacFarland or Columbia Heights Educational Campus.

Deal is overcrowded and took students off the waitlist based on June data. The whole reason they originally moved Eaton to Hardy feeder was to help reduce overcrowding - and they are taking off the waitlist - it does not make sense.

Eaton was supposed to feed Hardy. My current rising 7th grader had students who went to Eaton in her class. Makes you wonder how these kids are enrolling.

You are correct that difficult conversations are going to be needed, but eliminating 16th Street Heights and Crestwood from Deal would be only a drop in the bucket (along with it being a political impossibility). It would do next to nothing to fix the overcrowding.

Nothing is going to change at Deal until entire WOTP schools are removed from the feeder. Figuring out which ones and how that's going to work is going to be interesting to watch.

Removing the 16th St Heights / Crestwood is a signal. Even though it is minor it is a statement that we need to be all in for change.

To a lot of people in DC -- namely, the ones who make all the decisions -- the only thing it would signal would be removing black/brown kids from Deal. That's why it almost certainly won't happen (even though, using any semblance of logic and geography, kids in those neighborhoods should be going to schools closer to where they live).

There's no way that happens unless a WOTP school exits Deal with them.

Why always try to control DCPS families with the stick and never the carrot?
There must be ways to make McFarland attractive.

Dual Language was supposed to be the attractive element

The reason it signals removing black and brown kids from Deal is because PPP started off with "if we're going to alleviate overcrowding" and then when you pointed out that the solution would not at all alleviate overcrowding, switched to "I don't care I want to send a message."

The message isn't about overcrowding. It never is.
