Move the Hardy kids to the new GDS campus and alleviate over crowding at deal-move some schools that serve Deal to Hardy?
That was my assumption. It's geographically awkward -- although PP that made the point about the bus lines -- buses can be moved. Based on geography alone, it would make sense that we'd see Key, Hyde-Addison, and Mann go to the new MS. Stoddert, Eaton, Hearst and Bancroft to Hardy, plus any Oyster kids that didn't want to go on to Adams. Janney, Lafayette, Murch and Shepherd to Deal. BUT that only moves Hearst and Bancroft out of Deal, which doesn't help much -- Hearst is small (50 kids per class) and won't really make a dent. Maybe it would be better as a high school? Route ONLY Deal to Wilson, and route Hardy to a new HS?
I mean this is radical but it seems to me we need to split up the 2 biggest schools Janney and Lafayette from Deal -Stoddert to the new GDS site and then Janney to Hardy.
If the objective is to alleviate overcrowding at the middle schools (Deal and Hardy), there needs to be hard conversations that no one is going to have because they are hard. You can fix some of it right now - stop grandfathering 16th St Heights and Crestwood to Deal. There is no reason why students can not go to West or MacFarland Middle School. Change feeders: Based on locations - the logical move is to move Shepard to Wells and Bancroft feeds to MacFarland or Columbia Heights Educational Campus. Deal is overcrowded and took students off the waitlist based on June data. The whole reason they originally moved Eaton to Hardy feeder was to help reduce overcrowding - and they are taking off the waitlist - it does not make sense. Eaton was supposed to feed Hardy. My current rising 7th grader had students who went to Eaton in her class. Makes you wonder how these kids are enrolling.
You are correct that difficult conversations are going to be needed, but eliminating 16th Street Heights and Crestwood from Deal would be only a drop in the bucket (along with it being a political impossibility). It would do next to nothing to fix the overcrowding. Nothing is going to change at Deal until entire WOTP schools are removed from the feeder. Figuring out which ones and how that's going to work is going to be interesting to watch.
Removing the 16th St Heights / Crestwood is a signal. Even though it is minor it is a statement that we need to be all in for change.
