Fairfax County camp just cancelled

It mentions contracting contractors for refunds. We booked with someone that is listed in the Arlington catalogue but I am not sure if that means it is included in the cancellation. I initially registered for them before I even knew they were in the Arlington catalogue.

All camps in Arlington by Park and Rec programs are cancelled.

wouldn't a basketball camp also be indoors?

Our Rec center has an outdoor court too so who knows.

Camps of 50 kids or less could happen in phase 2, which we could be in by July.

Totally. Some private camps are still planning to be open. The virus will linger for years.

Hoping maybe for late July or August? I know, probably stupid. Haven't quite gotten to the acceptance stage in the cycle of grief yet.

OP, was your camp one that is run directly by the Fairfax County Parks, or by a third party? There are a lot of camps hosted in the county rec centers, but run by private camp groups. Just curious which party made the call to cancel, if you can tell.

We had one county rec center camp cancelled for early June, but it was due to low enrollment. The camps we have planned for the rest of the summer are still saying they want to open, but TBD.

Assuming they can meet all the guidelines for distancing and cleaning, which could be tough for some. I assume the ones who know they wouldn't be able to have already canceled, and the ones still holding out have figured out how they'd make it work. But any camps that do open will look a LOT different this year.

I am confused by the statement on the county website. I cannot figure out if my camp is cancelled - I did not receive any notice from Parktakes cancelling it and refunding my money. It was for a bike riding camp in early July at Oak Marr Rec center, booked via Parktakes. Anyone understand if this would be cancelled or on?

Agreed. I get the covid but it’s not going away for the next couple of years. As a matter of fact the new wave is coming back in Dec/Jan.
Fact is that we have to reopen and to open economy we must open childcare/camps. It’s so easy for counties to close camps just it’s so easy to close our schools-get rid of the problem and you don’t need to worry about making a plan or putting to work new, simple rules.
Not only that, this creates even more fear in people and stresses out the kids.
I’m looking at other, well developed countries, with huge pandemic numbers and their reopening of daycares, preschools and camps it’s happening now and we were shutdown at the same time.
Such a disservice to the kids.
But what do you expect? The same system closes schools and activities for snow, when there’s no snow....they cannot provide proper online continuing education, while our counterparts have a full day of virtual school from day 2!!! That’s why our kids are behind in all academics as compared to other countries and it should not be like this !
The whole situation is just horrific disservice to our kids.

Also a huge disservice to the small businesses running these camps who rely on county facilities, many who were preparing for distancing and sanitizing. I've received emails from several independent camps outlining how they will change the camps. Too bad.

We are both working parents, I am supposed to go back to the office after Memorial Day. What the hell am I supposed to do now? We followed the rules, we self-isolated and still got punished.

This is only happening in states with Democratic governors. [/quote

Pandemics aren’t anyone’s fault. You’re not being punished. It’s Called life. There is no one to blame.

Amanda from Golden Boot Soccer here. I hope the info I can provide is helpful, whether your child was registered for underwater basketweaving or intermediate chicken polo.

Sadly, PP, all camps in the Arlington Parks & Rec catalog are cancelled, whether they were run by Arlington staff or third-party businesses like ours. It's been a tough day for families, I know. We've been in contact with the hard-working Parks & Rec staff and everyone's disappointed but agrees that the kids' safety comes first.

OP, I'm afraid your camp won't run as planned, because your vendor won't be able to use Arlington facilities. I recommend you contact them to ask about options; with luck, they might have other locations still open, or a virtual camp they can offer. Otherwise, a good camp should offer an open-ended credit.

Dont assume your camp is cancelled if it doesnt tale place at a county facility..our camp only picks up at a county facility. They are changing the pickup location and still planning on running

They announced that all are canceled for the summer.

This is OP, yes, our camp was run by FC Parks Authority at the Mt. Vernon Rec center. We were only enrolled in two FC Rec center camps this summer because we were enrolled in another day camp which has already been canceled. My DD is also registered for a music camp at Lee District the following week in mid-August and that one hasn't been canceled yet. I think that was is also being run by the county and not by one of those private firms, like Learn Now Music.
