Sticker shock for Deck and Screened Porch estimates!

composites are expensive.

We ended up just replacing our old deck with pressure-treated wood. A handyman instead of a company will be a fraction of the cost.

Do not do a wooden deck. You will regret it. Trex all the way for low-maintenance.

the trex deck was going to be 10 grand. We did it for $500 with wood.

Ours cost $40k and didn’t count towards square footage. I wish I spent a little more to make it square footage. (doors/windows that open up with screens)

How big was your Porch? Bells and whistles?

Did ours over 15 years ago for about 22k. Screened porch. In Fairfax. Large. Best money spent. Use it all the time as weather in this area allows for almost 6 months or more use.

When dc were little we would push furniture to one end and they could ride their tricycles with coats on during the winter.

If you are staying in home long-term and love the outdoors, I think worth the expense. Do get at least 3 estimates!

Don’t forget that some contractors don’t know what they are doing, and charge accordingly. I once had a friend comment about how shoddy the work in their house was, and then say, “ At least we were smart about not paying too much.”

Is it attached to the house?

We did a Trex 23x17 deck (10 ft high) with stairs for about 25k. Got multiple quotes and they were all around the same range.

How long ago was that? Just for the deck correct? I guess my estimates are comparable.

Late 2019. I think folks may be willing to come down a bit in price now

Go with Azek. It's a knockoff of Trex, but not nearly as pricey.

In Nashville, not DMV, but we were quoted 15k for a 15x15 low composite deck, so $20-25k for a larger one with stairs seems reasonable.

Does it count as square footage for size of house?

No. Just like most basements don’t.
