Math league competition for 2nd grade

There's nothing strange about it. Schools have their own discretionary budget, and choose to fund whatever academic contests they deem appropriate. My kid's AAP center doesn't do CML, but all kids in 6th grade advanced math took AMC8. There are quite a lot of different contests out there, and each school is going to pick and choose whichever ones they want to do.

I had a hunch it had to be Haycock, the math dept there is pretty solid.

My 2nd grade math lover would love to have the opportunity to do something like this, but I haven't heard anything about it. We are not at Haycock.

You don't need to go to Haycock, you can always register them to go take it at a private center. For instance Math Kangaroo is another popular contest for younger kids: http://www.mathkangaroo.us/mk/registration.html

PP here - to clarify, while my second grader might enjoy something outside of school, what she'd really like is to get class time to do it. She's continuously complaining that math is too basic, even the level II stuff. She'd like more interesting math [i]at school/i].

That's tough, I don't think you can really do anything at this point in class, sadly. (You can try talking to the teacher but it's highly unlikely they'd have the will or time to give her any extra attention). Your best bet if you want a classroom like experience with more interesting/advanced math, is to sign up for an outside of school enrichment class.

What are her test scores and grades like? Does she have an approachable and reasonable teacher?

She consistently gets 4s on all her academic work, and her teacher is great, though I haven't asked for a change of work. Already marked as "above grade level" on her report cards for math and LA. Have been hoping she'll get into level IV and that will help things.

If your child is far ahead, would the teacher be willing to let her bring her own materials and work quietly on them? If so, I'd buy some beast academy books and send them to school with her.

Do you know what grade level work she is doing is Level II?

It's hard to tell. I don't think the level II pull-outs are all that often and her teacher hasn't provided feedback on whether the post-tests are advanced (in first her teacher would specifically tell me which units DD did an advanced post-test in). But she's definitely not doing the 3rd grade POS, because there's no multiplication - which she can already do - or division - which she only does in a rudimentary way.

I would try to find out what exactly she's doing in pull outs and what tests she's been given. If she's driven and already knows some of the 3rd grade curriculum she might still not be all that engaged in AAP.

They didn’t at our Vienna elementary school in Vienna either. Maybe it’s because DC and all friends were too busy talking about travel soccer in 2nd and we’re not interested in math competitions. They haven’t been given any in later years either.

That sounds accurate, travel sports for early elementary seem to be a craze around Vienna.
