Do red flashing school bus lights apply to cyclists?

Anonymous
No, they do not. No traffic laws apply to cyclists.

No, it wouldn't have been.

But yes, when I'm on a bike, I stop for stopped school buses, just as I do when I'm driving.

I think OP needs a better understanding of physics and bodily injury.

People are killed by bicyclists every year and a child hit by a cyclist has a good chance of being severely injured.

OP, seriously, just stop if you can't tell the difference between a 2-3 ton vehicle hitting you at 40 mph and a 200-pound person plus bike hitting you at 15 mph.

Completely agree. Also, many more people are killed by car drivers every year and a child hit by a car has a much higher chance of being severely injured or killed.

Both are a risk, but it’s silly to say that bicyclists are a similar level of risk. By that logic, so are joggers.

zzzzzzzz. I'm sure you were at fault if you were in a car park. Too many drivers become unhinged, impatient and entitled assholes around cyclists. Drivers are so dangerous.

The difference is the car will dismember you, whereas the bike will only kill you through blunt force trauma or closed head injuries. So you'll still be able to have an open casket funeral.

Advantage: getting hit by bike

“Speeding cyclist.”

OP is right. Sure, a car moving at a faster rate of speed would be more likely to kill someone, but that doesn’t negate the fact that a bicycle and rider moving fast could also kill a child. It happens. Slam a kid’s head into the pavement and the outcome won’t be good.

Joggers too. We need license plates for joggers!

No.

The actual number is 7 NYC pedestrians struck and killed by people on bicycles in 2012-2019 (8 years), so less than 1 per year.

Yes, it does happen. But it doesn't happen very often. Either in absolute numbers, or compared to children killed by motor vehicles. If you're worried about the safety of children on school buses, and you live in Montgomery County, you might start with the over 9,300 drivers who didn't stop for stopped school buses during the first 5 weeks of the 2018-19 school year.

You jog at 15 mph? And you weigh 225 pounds? Or you are just bad at science and math?

Take your irrational assumptions elsewhere. I don’t care what “most drivers” do in your mind; I’m a parent, had a child in the car, and was in a parking lot with many other children walking through it. I drove CAREFULLY and slowly through that lot because the last thing I want to do in my life is accidentally kill someone, especially a child. That cyclist had no business ignoring stop signs and expecting everyone else to stop for him.

So, what exactly do you mean by “you were at fault?”

I saw a little girl get hit by a 200 lb man on a bicycle who was wearing headphones and didn't stop for a red light. The girl flew into the air and suffered from broken ribs. Perhaps the bicyclist didn't kill her, but she could have easily be pushed into car traffic by the car, suffered head trauma, or been even more injured than she already was.

Frankly, all this talk about getting hit by cars vs bikes is ridiculous. Both are terrible. You don't want to be the one responsible for a child's injury or death.

I've seen both bicyclists and car drivers pull stupid, dangerous moves.
