No, it wouldn't have been.

But yes, when I'm on a bike, I stop for stopped school buses, just as I do when I'm driving.

I think OP needs a better understanding of physics and bodily injury.

People are killed by bicyclists every year and a child hit by a cyclist has a good chance of being severely injured.

OP, seriously, just stop if you can't tell the difference between a 2-3 ton vehicle hitting you at 40 mph and a 200-pound person plus bike hitting you at 15 mph.

“Speeding cyclist.”

OP is right. Sure, a car moving at a faster rate of speed would be more likely to kill someone, but that doesn’t negate the fact that a bicycle and rider moving fast could also kill a child. It happens. Slam a kid’s head into the pavement and the outcome won’t be good.

Yes, it does happen. But it doesn't happen very often. Either in absolute numbers, or compared to children killed by motor vehicles. If you're worried about the safety of children on school buses, and you live in Montgomery County, you might start with the over 9,300 drivers who didn't stop for stopped school buses during the first 5 weeks of the 2018-19 school year.

They’re not worried about safety. They’re mad that they have to share the road with slower traffic. Maddening!

So how about we circle back to the topic at hand? “Do flashing red school bus lights apply to cyclists?”

Debating the desirability of a child being hit by a bike vs a car is just stupid.

zzzzzzzz. I'm sure you were at fault if you were in a car park. Too many drivers become unhinged, impatient and entitled assholes around cyclists. Drivers are so dangerous.

Take your irrational assumptions elsewhere. I don’t care what “most drivers” do in your mind; I’m a parent, had a child in the car, and was in a parking lot with many other children walking through it. I drove CAREFULLY and slowly through that lot because the last thing I want to do in my life is accidentally kill someone, especially a child. That cyclist had no business ignoring stop signs and expecting everyone else to stop for him.

So, what exactly do you mean by “you were at fault?”

DP. As I recall, every single pedestrian hit in a Montgomery County parking lot last year (and there were lots) was hit by a driver. And, as a careful driver yourself, you know that many drivers routinely roll through stop signs and right turns on red.

OK.

Yes, when the cyclist is riding in the road.

End of thread.

And if on the sidewalk then yield to pedestrians, giving a wide berth, especially to children.

Right. Because there's simply no way a cyclist would ever zip recklessly through a parking lot.

Inconceivable.

More than a dozen annually JUST in NYC

No.

The actual number is 7 NYC pedestrians struck and killed by people on bicycles in 2012-2019 (8 years), so less than 1 per year.

It's so ingrained in me that I've felt the urge to stop for those buses even when I'm walking.

I love these threads, because they're so effective at drawing out the "cyclists-can-do-no-wrong-/-laws-are-for-cars-not-bikes-/-but but but but-whatabout-cars" dolts, who will go to any ridiculous extreme to justify or deflect, whichever is necessary, anything negative associated with cyclists.

It's absurd. Because you'll literally NEVER hear of car driver defending another driver for blasting through a red light or driving aggressively. But literally EVERY TIME a cyclist is criticized, some yahoo will pipe up and try to justify whatever they did.

If Trump was smart, he'd start riding a bike. WABA would then go to war to defend him, lolz!!!!

The difference is the car will dismember you, whereas the bike will only kill you through blunt force trauma or closed head injuries. So you'll still be able to have an open casket funeral.

Advantage: getting hit by bike

Put the bottle of wine down.

Awwwwww, someone doesn't understand how physics works.

I hate these threads, because they remind me that there are people out there, operating heavy machinery at high speeds, who hate me and wish me harm simply because I am trying to get from Here to There safely and legally on a bicycle.

Also, you hear people defending aggressive driving all the time, including in real life. I generally assume that the people who defend aggressive driving are themselves aggressive drivers.

How about an UNbiased source? Not one that's a cycling advocacy group?!?!

Do you also get gun statistics from the NRA?

Right.

On.
