In Spanish the Maria names all have their own nicknames. Maria Teresa = Maite. Maria del Prado = Pradito. |
There's a famous Instagram family where all the daughters are named some variation of Mary X. It's weird.
I think the handle is 5 Marys |
NBD if the first name is Mary or Maria.

I have a friend with 2 girls 11 mos apart who look like twins. The both have M names that sound similar, its crazy, I still have no idea which one is which ( not close friends, just in same circle) |
I was going to say that it's not super unusual in Latin America to name the girls María-something. It's dated, but it still happens. |
The Foreman’s were my childhood neighbors in Houston - all the Georges go by nicknames. And his girls aren’t all named Georgette |
My catholic grandparents named their daughters this way. One goes by the compound name, the other by her middle. Maybe these kids’ parents are a forgetful lot and didn’t want to call a kid by the wrong name? ![]() Report back, op if they have any other kids named “Anna.” Hopefully the limit is two. But who knows maybe the dog is Anna Bud? (And pay no mind to Karen the chocolate coffee poster.) |
Names fascinate me. Two generations ago, it was not at all uncommon for Catholic families to name each daughter Mary with a different (saint's) name as a middle. Only one daughter (eldest) would go by Mary and her sisters would usually only use their middle names. Great example; the Fisher Quints, born in South Dakota.
The quints, four girls and a boy, arrived on Sept. 14, 1963 — just days after the X-ray — and were named Mary Ann, Mary Catherine, Mary Margaret, Mary Magdalene and James Andrew.Feb 2, 2015 |

I almost prefer same names rather than cutesy similar. I've also known sisters named Melinda and Melissa and Breanna and Deanna (born years apart and without any other siblings) and then versions of the same name, Elizabeth and Lisa. From my family tree: brothers Theodore Royce and Leonore Boyce, born 1908 and 1909. They went by Teddy and Leo. And a current sibset that tends to make me stumble over their names and confuse the sisters; Gabrielle and Isabelle. And, the girls go by nicknames, Gabi and Belle. |
oh do tell |
I"m pretty sure this is very common in Spain and ITaly still. I think they use a little m to indicate that, in front of the name that they are called. |
Teacher here. I had a family with four kids whose names were all cities- Alexandria, Brooklyn, London and I forget the last one. I told the first one that I liked her name and that’s I used to live in Alexandria in VA. She said we are all named after where we were “made.” ? That was info I wish I didn’t know. |
Yep. One of my mom's friends was one of 5 girls - all Mary + and most, like my mom's friend, went by their middle name. It sounds like they were naming them compound names Anna-Laura Anna-Marie etc and then their names got shortened when they went in to kindergarten. My friend's ds went by two names until kinder and then the second name just dropped. People who knew him from preschool still call him by both names but the ones from elementary don't. |
lol! |
Reminds me of the Bob Newhart show.
"This is my brother, Daryl, and my other brother, Daryl." |
