Names fascinate me. Two generations ago, it was not at all uncommon for Catholic families to name each daughter Mary with a different (saint's) name as a middle. Only one daughter (eldest) would go by Mary and her sisters would usually only use their middle names. Great example; the Fisher Quints, born in South Dakota. The quints, four girls and a boy, arrived on Sept. 14, 1963 — just days after the X-ray — and were named Mary Ann, Mary Catherine, Mary Margaret, Mary Magdalene and James Andrew.Feb 2, 2015
Yep. One of my mom's friends was one of 5 girls - all Mary + and most, like my mom's friend, went by their middle name. It sounds like they were naming them compound names Anna-Laura Anna-Marie etc and then their names got shortened when they went in to kindergarten. My friend's ds went by two names until kinder and then the second name just dropped. People who knew him from preschool still call him by both names but the ones from elementary don't.
