| Bad info here. Call Insurance company only. It is collision coverage, not comprehensive. |
OP said they got the person’s plate. Does that make a difference? I had the same happen to me once and I took the info to the police. They tracked down the driver almost two years later and she was made to pay. But that happened on a public street. |
Nope. Its not necessarily fake, its just someone elses. But to try and track that person down and then prove they did what the OP said they did, its a waste of Police time and money. Insurance does the part OP needs them to do. |
Its still on private property, so no it doesnt make a difference. It wasn't a hit and run once they got out and spoke to each other. |
| Your insurance will handle, and thank God. If you needed the police to so something it would make your life way harder. |

Sadly I have personal experience in this situation. I was rear ended by a taxi on a street in MoCo. The taxi driver called the police but they would not come. There wasn’t any reason and it was all handled by insurance.
A car did the exact same thing to my in a parking spot in Fairfax County. Tried to deny it and then got upset she was being wrongly accused and called the police herself. They came out and determined she was at fault. All to say maybe the police issue depends on the jurisdiction. |
| It's still prudent to call the police depending on what state you're in, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't. If the damage is over a certain amount or if there's any kind of injuries it's a necessity in some jurisdictions. Sure, they may not come out because it's not a high priority, but what's the downside to reporting this? They can advise you on how to file up with an online report. It should make insurance easier. |
And by did the same thing, I mean hit my car while trying to park while I was sat in my car making a shopping list. |
| We were hit by an uninsured motorist. When we called our insurance company immediately after the accident they told us we needed to file a police report to activate the uninsured motorist coverage. We called the police and they came took our statement and gave us a case number for our insurance company. The police officer told us there are 3 times to call the police after an accident: 1) uninsured motorist involved; 2) airbags were deployed; and 3) if an ambulance was called. This was in MD. |
She has plate info for the car, and the suspect gave her a fake ID, so it seems to me like it is a police matter after all. OP should definitely call to file a report anyway. Even if she is told no. |
What? This was a hit and run. Of course call the cops. |
No it wasn't. She spoke to the other driver. |
| It's a good thing you took pictures of the car and license plate. As others have mentioned, let your insurance handle this. |
She spoke to the driver, who produced identification documents that were not them. She has no idea who the driver actually is. |
| Your insurance company will tell you whether to file a police report at this point. I thought that if damage was over a certain dollar amount you are required to call police. Don't know what that dollar amount is, though. |
