How do you pay your teenage babysitter?

Anonymous
OP here. It is an honest question - I asked how you all pay your teenage babysitters. I’m not asking if all the adults on DCUM use Venmo, I actually want to know if moms are using Venmo etc to pay 14 year old kids for babysitting.

I always paid cash and my daughter wants cash so trying to find out if that’s unreasonable. She says her friends also get paid in cash.

I have an Ally account for each of my 3 kids who are younger than your teen. They don't get many checks but I can deposit them with my phone.

Your daughter could do this. Bank accounts for kids are a good thing to do.

I usually pay cash. But there are times I haven't had cash. I've offered to give them a check on the spot, or to give them cash next time I see them. Our babysitters are all on the block, so it probably wouldn't be too long a delay but it could be a week depending on when I get cash or when I see them. They have usually said a check was fine.

If a babysitter said she would prefer Venmo to a check, I would be happy to do that. It just hasn't come up.

How do you “not have cash?” You knew you hired them and would have to pay them! You can get cash back from almost any grocery store, and there are ATMs everywhere. There is no excuse.

I deposit checks with my cell phone. At work, at home, on the bus, wherever.

Who GOES to a bank?

Just teach your daughter to budget.

I have a friend who pays her babysitter with a check. I told her that was rude! People - speak up. OP, your kids needs to say “I only accept cash.”

Great lesson for when she gets a real job.

I would give her cash if she asked, but paying by check isn’t a ridiculous option. Get her a bank account. I also don’t use those cash services like Venmo. I’m very picky about what I let access my bank accounts, and I’m not paying a fee to have it tied to a credit card when I have a checkbook that’s free.

I am assuming the issue is the kid wants cash to spend. Depositing the check from your phone does nit get you dollars to spend.

Babysitter here. Paid via cash, check, or Venmo.
Deposit checks with my phone. Easy.

She gets paid for the work she does.

Why would a teen need cash immediately?

Who gives a shit why she needs it? It's her money, she earned it, the woman needs to pay her in a way that is convenient.

Are you paid in cash?

Teenage babysitters are not the same as "real jobs."

DD has a debit card. Checks are better for her. I deposit them and transfer money to her account and then her card.

The cash she gets is still sitting in my office. Like me, DD doesn’t carry cash. She just pays with her debit card or one of her apps (STBX, DD)

Baby sitters are a dime a dozen. If she doesn't like how she's paid then don't accept the job, someone else will do the job. Checks are easily deposited on phones.

If my employer gave me a stack of cash every other Friday I'd be annoyed because I prefer direct deposit.

My kid is the opposite, I prefer when she gets paid with checks so she can deposit using her phone. She only carries around a small amount of cash and pretty much exclusively uses her debit card for store purchases and Venmo between her friends.

When she gets cash for babysitting, she gives it to me to deposit in her account. Usually I don't make it to the bank and so I keep the cash and transfer the $$ to her account from mine.
