Prozac - what has been your experience?

Can you give some information on where to get the genetic testing done? Does insurance cover it? How much does it cost?

The only side effects he has are some fogginess for the first couple of hours but he takes it right when he wakes up and says by the time he's at school it's passed, if it happens at all.

What dose is he on? I'm just curious as to what "pretty low" means... thanks!

DP but my teen started at 10 mg (which doctor described as a "kindergartner dose") and landed at 30 mg where he has been 2 years.

OP here again - thank you. Doctor started my teen on 10 mg. It’s been around 10 days and I haven’t noticed much, although it’s my understanding that it takes a while to kick in. Has this been the case for others?

We normally saw a difference if it was going to help in a week (but we waited two). 10 mg is very low - you probably need to go up. When are you scheduled to go back?

OP here again.... I think I'm starting to see subtle improvements... his mood has improved several notches.

Another question... is Prozac mainly managed by psychiatrists? Could a family doctor manage it? (and I could avoid psych's fees - doesn't take insurance)

I am the PP -- family doctor does it. And I rechecked the numbers: Teen has landed at 40 mg, not 30. He's 6 foot 200 pounds.

Could anyone share their experiences with genetic testing? Where did you get it done? and how much did it cost?

Thanks. Did it help in choosing the right medications? If you don’t mind can you share diagnosis and the prior meds as well as how the genetic testing changed the medication. We are considering it since we have been through several med changes with little positive effect.

It takes about 3 to 4 weeks for it to take effect. Our son is on 10 mg but we’ll be weaning him off in another month so the doctor said use 5 mg for two months and then wellll taper off. He was showing signs of severe selective mutism an anxiety disorder in Preschool but has shown none since starting K.

OP here... Our doctor used https://genesight.com/ - all it requires is a swab inside the mouth. Costs around $300.

Are there actually tests that says "doesn't work" or just how fast or slow someone metabolizes the meds?

Do they also take something else for ADHD? My child takes Adderall and I am concerned about seratonin syndrome.

There seems to be some good experience with Prozac for OCD, but for DC it was activating and it was quickly discontinued. What dose is your child on?

DP, my cousin takes zoloft for OCD and does well on it.

Prozac was life changing when my then 13 yr old HFA son expressed thoughts of depression, existential crisis, anxious stomachaches. In 2 weeks of 10mg it practically all disappeared. We were doing therapy at the time but it almost became pointless doc said bc his crazy worries were gone. He stayed on 10 mg for 2 yrs. No side effects, nothing but positives. We weaned him off this past summer to get a baseline and to see if he still needs it. Jury is still out, he started having some existential dread creep back, trying to talk thru it.
