Prozac - what has been your experience?

Anonymous
I am considering Prozac (suggested by psychiatrist) for my teen son, who also has autism. His overall mood has dampened noticeably in the last 4-6 months. I normally resort to supplements but nothing is cutting it.

Please share your experiences with Prozac - any success stories? Thank you.

My son did very well on Prozac (anxiety/depression) for many years and he improved greatly. We switched to zoloft because it became gradually less effective and that has worked well also.

I’ve taken Prozac for anxiety and depression since I was 13. I’m currently 31, with three kids. I’ve tried coming off at various points and had no withdrawal issues, but definite increase in symptoms so I’ve always gone back on. It’s worked extremely well for me. I reacted VERY badly to Zoloft.

Prozac gave me back my child when she was tormented by her anxiety and OCD.

There seems to be some good experience with Prozac for OCD, but for DC it was activating and it was quickly discontinued. What dose is your child on?

Same here. Prozac worked well for awhile but then seemed to taper in effectiveness. So far the Zoloft has remained steady.

Prozac has been positively life changing for my boys (now teens) with ADHD/anxiety. We've seen no negative side effects.

My OCD kid is another poster child for prozac giving him back his life. He's on a pretty low dose, coupled with therapy, and it's been changing for him. The only side effects he has are some fogginess for the first couple of hours but he takes it right when he wakes up and says by the time he's at school it's passed, if it happens at all.

Works great for my child with language and learning disorders.

He ramped up very slowly and school and us at home noticed the difference.

What dose is he on? I'm just curious as to what "pretty low" means... thanks!

DP but my teen started at 10 mg (which doctor described as a "kindergartner dose") and landed at 30 mg where he has been 2 years.

OP here again - thank you. Doctor started my teen on 10 mg. It’s been around 10 days and I haven’t noticed much, although it’s my understanding that it takes a while to kick in. Has this been the case for others?

We normally saw a difference if it was going to help in a week (but we waited two). 10 mg is very low - you probably need to go up. When are you scheduled to go back?

We did the genetic testing. Showed prozac wasn't going to work. We put him on effexor and started seeing a difference in 6 days. It was a transformation.
