+100 Yep, a bunch of clueless people. They probably don't even have kids in MCPS |
| Still nothing? |

Take a breath everyone. The problem was with the vendor, MCPS had nothing to do with it, and the scores will come when they come.
The score is the score. Knowing it today will not change anything, so use this as an opportunity to practice taking a step back. |
I'm curious on your source that it's a vendor issue. Typically the state delivers files to every school system in Maryland at the same time. For 2018-2019 the state delivered the initial score files to school systems around July 12th. This file isn't considered final and doesn't have all the final data. Then the file with the final data was delivered on August 23rd. The state also says that the data is embargoed and not to be made public until they release the information at their state board meeting. But it is also understood by many school systems that the part that is embargoed is the aggregated results that would report school or county performance. It is okay to release individual student scores directly to families. I never chimed in earlier because thought that maybe MCPS decided it wasn't worthwhile to process the initial 7/12 file because it wasn't the final file. And then later on thought maybe they interpreted the embargoed rules differently. Where they were waiting until after the state board's meeting before releasing the data. My understanding is that it was originally supposed to be presented at the state board meeting towards the end of August but it sounds like it got delayed. So if they were waiting for the next state board meeting and they're releasing the data/reports two or three weeks from now, that timeline sounds kind of right if that's the reason. With the issue with the vendor file, it looks like the state loaded the 2018-2019 data on mdreportcard and it has an as of date of 8/27. So their data is likely based off of the 8/23 delivery of the scores. It is possible that there was a vendor issue and they'll reload the data for MCPS with the updated data. It's also curious that other school systems in Maryland didn't have this issue. So if something did happen on the vendor end, then was the initial issue caused in how MCPS processed something? Because none of the other school systems were affected. Also keep in mind that MCPS is changing their student information system, so the transition may have been caused some of the delay too. Such as they decided it wasn't worth it to load the data into the old system and had to prepare the system to be able to load it in. So any of those reasons may have seemed viable. ie waiting for the final scores file, how they interpreted on when they can release the data or it was due to their transitioning of student information systems. But I kind of question that it was an issue on the vendor's side of things. I'm not saying it's not possible but I just question it. |
| In Howard County, I could see my kids' PAARC scores in the parent portal around August 23. The school system hasn't sent scores home, but they were there when I looked. |
PARCC not PAARC. |
| I got PARCC (MCAP) scores in the mail today for my current 4th grader but not my 6th grader. |
Ditto - got the 4th Grader's, but not the 7th Grader's score today. |
|
Honest question - what's the rush in wanting to seeing the score? What will knowing the score help with beyond other available measures of student performance?
Parent of a 1st grader |
|
Doesn't matter for 1st grader..but critical data for 5th or 8th grade parents as magnet selection uses it as one of the criteria.
If the kid got 4 rating, parents can rest in peace now rather than wait until 1st week of Feb. |
| You need a certain score to pass Algebra. |
Also did not get one for my 6th graders yet. |
It doesn't feel like much of a rush in seeing the score. The kids took the test about five months ago, and it took a fair amount of class time and emphasis. It doesn't mean much, but my kid was happy to finally learn how she did. |
Well, it’s been about 5 months. I wouldn’t say that it’s a ‘rush’. But 5 months seems like enough time. And MCPS has sent home scores earlier in the past. |
Really? You're the parent of a FIRST GRADER. You're right that it doesn't matter and you shouldn't care but many people who have been anxious are anxious because you're required to get a certain score in Algebra to graduate and a good number of kids don't pass. If you don't pass you need to make preparations to take the test again, maybe teach your child yourself, or get a tutor or think about repeating the class. It's a big deal if your child is in 8th grade. There are also some parents whose children need an environment like the magnets and their parents are trying to see if they have a shot or need to make other arrangements (move, private, home school.) PPs are right you probably need a 5 to even be in the pool. I don't have a child in any of these situations but I have friends with older children and they are pretty frustrated. |
