Not really, there are "nondenominational" community churches -- often they are fundamentalist (strict adherence to the Bible), but not always and they don't have the same set of rules that a denominational church (e.g., pentecostal, Baptist) would have.

Good idea, for people who want to be part of a community without being locked into a set of supernatural beliefs.

Right, but it’s ridiculous to claim you attended a church for 9 years and don’t know what church you attended.

Op here. Not a troll. I read the Bible. Many times actually.

As a teenager I expressed to my parents simple things like “can I stay home today” or “i don’t want to go to pray for 6 hours whole fasting” simple things here and there. I’m just upset my mom made me go 4x a week for years. As an adult but still financially dependent I told them I wasn’t going anymore and my mom hit me. I moved out as soon as I could.

Former Catholic here. Once your eyes are open to the hypocrisy, you can't not see it. I read the Bible, but will not attend services at another church of any denomination.

Do you read the Bible though? Because there is a very real emphasis on community and fellowship in it. Jesus did not just wander around alone, the early church was not just a bunch of guys wandering around solo.

It's such a cop out to say you worship alone but "read the Bible." No you don't. Find a better church. Not all churches are nightmarish.

Matthew 18:20. I study the Bible with my family.

I think dogma/church is a lower level of understanding our own existence/spirit.

Imagine how frustrating it would be if you were ready for high school but you family kept you in kindergarten.

You are doing the right thing.

Continue with your journey.

Whenever I read something like this I think that this is a person who is trying to sound “open” and modern but is actually just as close minded and dogmatic as the people they claim to be superior to.

You obviously are not familiar with Christian spirituality or have met a spiritual Christian person, or Jewish person, or Muslim person. You just want to pat yourself on the back for knowing nothing and following nothing and being “spiritual.”

That is lovely and necessary but not enough. You should read the Bible with your family AND go to a good church. There are SO MANY verses in the Bible about this, please don’t make me copy paste them on my phone, it’s so annoying.

See also, Matthew 7:1-3, as you appear to have a problem with judging people.

Op here. I really don’t like where this post is going. I respect all people’s choice but its obvious EVERYONE judges each other even me at times. I ask that everyone please share their experience or thoughts. Please don’t start arguing or anything like that. If so start another thread.

We came here to vent about the hypocrisy of church and the aftermath of inculcation, not for bible study or for your proselytizing.

If your mom hit you for not going to church as an adult, she’s just abusive and that is your problem. If your family had been atheists she would have found some other framework to hit you or abuse you. Manipulative abusive people love using religion for cover.

Your teen years are over, grieve for what you didn’t have in your family and life and move on.

I’m not really judging you because I don’t know you or anything about you.

You are expressing an opinion that you can worship Jesus solo or just with your immediate family, this is unsupported by the Bible and centuries of Christian theology. Don’t take it so personally. Jesus didn’t only preach to his family, nor did Peter or Paul or anyone else in the New Testament. Having a healthy Christian community is vital to your spiritual life.
