what percent of appeals get in?

I don’t know a percent and don’t know anyone else in real life who has appealed (i.e. they may not be admitting?) but we are real people who really appealed and got in on appeal. Can’t say for certain why, but we did submit a WISC > 132 from GMU on appeals and that likely was a factor.

In addition to the WISC what did you submit? Do you have any insight into why you were not accepted initially?

Also had:
Additional work samples - doesn’t sound like much but they were very strong work done between referral deadline and appeals time, included strong math.
A parent letter - was able to say more than in the half-page or so box on the parent referral form, including highlighting strong math and lack of advanced math at base until 5th grade. WISC subscores also tied into this very nicely.

I can’t say if I had done WISC alone if it would have been successful, but maybe. I do think the whole appeals packet we submitted was cohesive and made a strong case as a whole, with the WISC to back it up.

As for first round, I think it was just a judgement call 50/50 perhaps? I could maybe argue the initial decision was “wrong” but again hard to say. Scores were below cutoff but obly just barely. High GBRS (teens). Better work samples on appeal but decent ones first round. Who knows but I think the final decision was appropriate in our case and not just hey you appealed so you’re in.

that you that was helpful.

I successfully appealed with more work samples, 2 letters (one from parent and one from STEAM program Director of a program my child attended) and a WISC over 149. My child got in on appeal.

Kind of buried the lede there. Weird phrasing. "Over 149"?

We appealed with new work samples and letters of recommendation and did not get in. No WISC. CoGat was mid 120's with 130's Quantitative. The NNAT was 115.

It was in the 150s but didn't feel the need to say what it was. I guess I could have said over 150. That was weird of me. My mistake. Not sure it was the driving factor as he had CogAT score of 146 and was denied.

Well, that's ridiculous.

A mom whose kid got rejected from TJ said about half. Her kid still didn’t make it.

Fixing the above-I meant AAP, not TJ. She also said that in hindsight, if your child got rejected the first time and you appeal and push them in through parent effort, odds are your kid won’t be thriving there anyway and it hurts kid’s confidence level.

Seriously!! Is that a typo? Why did the 149 kid get rejected in the first place?

My experiences were years back. For my daughter, all NNAT and COGAT were below cutoff score (close though). The psychology test was 141 so she got in.
For my son, all his NNAT and FxAT were above cutoff and he was rejected. His WISC was 129? - dont remember the details. He also got in on appeal.
The original reject was due to low GBRS because he has ADHD.
Both of them did very well in the program.
