This was Damascus. Not anywhere the same type of money as in LA.

I’d rather they focus on the sexual assaults for now. It’s a systemic problem and MCPS will never acknowledge the dangers on its own.

I hope the investigators talk to the MC Police Department. They would have lots to share about MCPS and sexual assault.

Excellent.
They should also investigate the ‘school security offices’ that have ‘officers’ who are sleeping with teenagers and elementary school caregivers telling kids to put their hands ‘ in my pocket’.

Sopeanas should be issued for complaints over the past 10 years of every MCPS high school, then the larger problems and the commonality of how reports are treated by MCPS would be known.

The Montgomery County Police Department could provide information on how often they have a case where MCPS employees failed to report and did an internal investigation prior to the police investigation.

It’s more than that but that would be a good start. The PD could provide insight on how bad the situation has really gotten.

At a minimum, the Montgomery County Council should be asking the Montgomery County Police Department how often they come across cases where MCPS did their own investigation because of failure to immediately report and what that interference did to their cases.

The rapists were Black students who had been expelled from their previous HS because of discipline problems and were sent to Damascus HS. The raped students were mainly White and one Black student, if I recall correctly.

I do not think race had anything to do with this, but this would have become a racist incident if White students would have raped Black students with brooms.

The fact that these terrible humans were shunted to Damascus HS, from their previous HSs is something that needs to be addressed. For violent or habitual offender students, there needs to be a special HS. Call it jail, call it Juvi Hall, call it school for troubled students - no one cares. Just get these students away from regular student population.

I look forward to getting an email from Jack Smith about this! Or, maybe the Area Superintendent can put out a cheery, optimistic tweet on the investigation in true MCPS fashion.

I’m surprised Dr. Smith hasn’t quit. What a mess of a system.

He must be forced out.

He doesn’t need to.

MCPS is holding a LGBTQIA forum next week. More optics to pretend that he cares about students. But in reality, the BOE and Jack Smith couldn’t care less about student safety.

It’s pathetic. And sad that parents feel so helpless.

Agreed.

This is a messed up system.

I am confused by a line in a Sentinel article -

“Last month, the State’s Attorney’s Office approved our request to begin an internal investigation of the supervision of the boys’ locker room on the afternoon of October 31, 2018,” Smith wrote. “This investigation is underway, and we expect it to conclude in the coming weeks.”

This seems to imply that the MCPS Superintendant asked for the MoCo State’s attorney’s office to look at the Damascus incident. Is that true? Did MCPS ask for this, or did the MoCo State’s attorney start an inestigation independantly? Or did the Council or County Executive request the State’s Attorney to look at it?

I hope some enterprising reporter is making MPIA requests of whatever info he/she can get on this.

What an utter farce. Jack Smith is the emperor with no clothes.
People are laughing at him behind his back.
