Are the rates posted on the nanny forums accurate?

Chances are that nanny who accepts less than $20 will leave the second she is offered more than $20.

But try it, OP. Try to get a nanny for under $30 and see what happens.

Ha! I live in a community full of wealthy people with nannies, and not one is paying their nanny over 22$/hr. Look at care.com and other online forum with real data on market pricing, because this forum is full of aspirational nannies.

As a nanny, this is the best response. There most definitely is a wide range of rates just like there is a wide range of nannies. Some nannies will accept any amount, especially when they are desperate. As you can see many parents think they have a good or decent nanny and will that to justify what they pay/can afford. A nanny is a luxury item and the best demand a higher amount. Anyone can lie about their credentials and a background check only shows so much. You should list what you can afford to pay and see what nannies apply.

This is actually very good advice, OP.

Care.com is trash. Anyone can post and they don’t vet. It’s full of scammers. If that’s your choice then I can only imagine your criteria for a nanny. And sure you live in a wealthy community

Don’t confuse a nanny and an au pair.

No, you clearly do not live in a community full of wealthy people. Wealthy people use agencies and no nanny from an agency - even without college - is less than $25 an hour.

NP here and this I know for sure.

This isn’t true. I know some families who have used agencies. But most wealthy families hire through word of mouth.

Yup. I am wealthy according to my tax returns, and I got my nanny from a wealthier family whose kids had aged out of their nanny. And she was paying far less than 20$ an hour.

The nanny forum is not a good place to get advice on rates.

+1 It is not based in reality. Ask your neighbors/mom friends what they are paying for their nannies or if they know of anyone looking to be a nanny. People find nannies via local listservs and word of mouth.

I think the nanny forum is pretty spot on when it comes to rates. However the foreign, undocumented nannies rarely post as their English isn’t up to par so you will be getting responses from mostly American nannies.

Not in our case. In California now an individual cannot run a full background check so for security reasons, we had to go through an agency.

Well, anyone can be posting anything. It's an anonymous forum, and people have their agenda. Care.com is a good source to get a sense of what market rates are like, and as others have suggested, just ask around. 30$ an hour is not happening in this area.

That's not the case in this DMV area. The only people I've known who have used agencies were in a tough spot because a caregiver quit at the last minute and needed someone right away who was vetted. Otherwise for planned hiring, people tend to do word of mouth.

Anyone can be posting anything here as well. You are absolutely right that ppl have an agenda, and it seems the agenda here is to get the cheapest care possible while claiming your $15/hr nanny is amazing Why would an experienced and smart nanny work for a low wage?

Care.com is not a good source. It list “market rates” as $16/hr. It also charges nannies on the site. Offer $16 and see what kind of candidates line up. The families listed on there want to pay very low. While $30/hr isn’t happening for you, which is fine, others can afford that. If someone claims they make $30/hr who are you to say they don’t. I currently make close to $30/hr plus overtime in a nanny share with vacation days, sick days, and federal holidays off. Oh yeah, I work in NW. I am strictly through word of mouth now and haven’t had an issue finding an employer. However, I have had issues with families trying to lowball me when it was clear they should be looking into daycare or other arrangements.

Nannies are for the wealthy, not for the mid wealthy looking for a deal on childcare.

So you have no data, but are attacking a widely used data source, because you make a certain wage and therefore other people are all making that same wage. Um, ok. Good thing you're a nanny and not in a field involving analytics.
