SR and Visi Admissions

He was joking on the way home that DD (6th grader) should stop studying if she wants to go to all-girls schools. Legacy? Parochial connections? The whole process is a puzzle. The boys' results made more sense, at least at our school.

Which school are you talking about? I’m assuming Visitation.

Stone Ridge admissions are not like that. They definitely value strong students and there isn’t a ‘lower level student track’ - though apparently there were many applications this year so some good students probably were not admitted.

Please let’s remember that both Visi and SR look at the whole student. It’s not just about grades. Both also look at teacher recommendations.

Visitation evaluated things like ‘how much the parent volunteers’ which is ridiculous and basically gossip.

1. How do you know Visi evaluated that?
2. What's wrong with a school that wants involved families?

It’s a question on the teacher recommendation form. I think it makes sense. Just as the K-8 schools want parents who are involved, so do the high schools. It’s hardly gossip.

I agree. Some schools give mom-volunteers significant responsibilities. A stay at home mom who is involved with the school (head of PTA, ran auction, etc) is extremely valuable. There's no way that information isn't communicated from K-8s to high schools. I have to imagine it can make a kid stand out when a bunch of similar kids are being considered.

This is a way (along with not having to request FA) that wealthier people have a leg up in this process, even if they aren't rich enough to buy their way in with a new gym or library.

PP, some of the most "involved" moms at both schools are women who work outside the home. I am sure we can all agree that it is a good thing when moms and dads can together to support their children's school.

can ^work^ together

This is correct, overly involved moms are a hit in cookie-cutter schools!

You can see the evidence of this in both the increase in applications and in the enrollment numbers in public schools.

I know nothing about Visi, but my daughter's year there were definitely some full pay students that were admitted over girls with better ssats and grades who needed financial aid. These schools are not need blind. SR has very few slots to fill vs. Visi (and other high schools). I imagine they want to save their financial aid dollars to build a well-balanced class.

About how many applications did Visitation receive this year?
