"HRCS" parents-- are you playing the lottery?

Thought we wanted Spanish immersion but so happy with HRCS kids are in and the fact that it's walking distance from our home that we decided not to lottery for immersion schools.

At Latin and staying put.

Have to lottery for a PK3er. May as well put some schools we didn't succeed at prior. Whether we'd take an offer is up in the air though. We may be putting ourselves in the path of tough decisions, because we like where we are.

Staying put at our charter. No lottery. But, not sure if we qualify as HRCS either.

Not sure how that is moving up, but good luck.

I am not either but DH wants the Spanish.

NP. Then why say moving up? No dog in fight, but we’ve had 3 friends leave a good school for MV and all 3 have regretted it.

I guess because it is "up" in his view. I am kinda not into it. Sometimes the spousal agreement is the hardest part of the lottery.

+1 on spousal agreement! Not to derail the thread but managing expectations around child's education can be equally hard as money issues, domestic chores, etc!

re: lottery, we are also at ITS and staying put. Our kid is happy, healthy and enjoys going to school. I think I've finally figured out that that combo (happy, healthy, enjoyment) is the greenest grass. It happens in lots of different schools, and lots of different scenarios, and if you get there with your kid enjoy that ride as long as it lasts!

PP, how do you feel about the middle school and what happens for high school if you don't get into an application school?

NP here - we are excited to join the middle school at ITS as it grows. As for high school, tbh we can't afford to move into a Wilson feeder neighborhood so we will just have to figure it out like everyone else. Also not sure that Wilson would be a good fit for one of our kids anyways. Planning on staying in the city. Hoping for application high school luck or expansion of other options like Latin. I know hope isn't a strategy but a lot of ITS kids have been able to move onto application schools and we're hoping that continues.

I like where the middle school is headed, and feel confident about the middle school principal. As long as the educational approach and class size continues to work for child, we'll stay put through 8th.

High school seems like another inflection point, no matter where you are in the city. There appears to be lots of ITS support in helping kids find high schools that work for them. Past classes have had students accepted at a wide range of schools, including competitive application schools. We're also financially able to consider private (although at HS, this is a whole 'nother ball of wax!).

At this point, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. At risk of getting pummeled on this forum for saying this, our family has backed away from the constant obsession over getting all the school stuff lined up, once and for all. School "choice" makes it feel like you have the option, and responsibility, to craft the perfect educational experience for your child. But the reality is that this is about "chance" not choice, "perfect" for child changes ALL THE TIME, and there are just too many variables over the course of a PS3-12 education path to be able to nail everything down at any given point.

So, since we're happy now, the discussion is tabled.

At CMI (not sure that is HRCS any longer) in early/mid elementary and ECE and playing the lottery for other charters and OOB DCPS.

At DCI and super-happy!

Playing the lottery for the rising Pk3-er but not for our older child. Happy where we are for now.

Dumb question, what is HRCS?

LOL. You've been in the school for less than 6 months.

It's a made-up term on this forum for "highly-regarded charter schools." Shorthand for a critical mass of UMC and white children. There's less agreement on this than what constitutes the Big 3 in the private school forum.
